I wonder if, like in SourceSDK, u could use decals? And perhaps u could use ann'Activate' output from a trigger? Treat footprints as one would treat bullet hits on a wall.
IF this is possible u might want to clarify how far away from where you set/place the decal ('infodecal' in SourceSKD) the footprints can, may, or will appear-in SourceSDK the distance is 16 units. IF that is the case a workaround to THAT might be that you'd have to split your floor (the area in which you desire the footprints) into thirds quite possibly, and on the middle third (for example) place the decal. BUT then THAT might result in a 3 unit effect, that is to say that if a decal lands within 3 units of another brush the decal might splatter onto the adjacent brusch, capice? Cuz blood splatters-but you don't want your footprints to splatter onto a wall.
