Replacing avatars like the Kaiju

I want to make an asynchronous mobile/VR game like Kaiju City Showdown. So I need to replace default Meta avatars with custom in-game avatars. Unfortunately I have not been able to find any documentation about doing this. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks!
