The future of Horizon Worlds (in VR) ?

As the word on the streets has it, Meta is redirecting a lot of resources from VR (including Metaverse) to AR. What does it mean for Horizon Worlds, especially as VR app/platform? It would be pretty devastating making my next world only to find out that the platform is dead/discontinued/shutting down.

  • It means Worlds is pivoting to what works currently(mobile). Depending on future markets, they may be able to revisit VR once the platform has more stability in the mobile market, but for now this appears how we keep the platform alive.

  • Horizon Worlds suck, for VR at least :( I don't know why I thought it would be different. I guess only Meta partner's get to have promotions and visibility boosts.

It's crazy how easy (although it's limited in functionality and features) it is to dev for Horizon Worlds, but not only it doesn't pay off monetarily, it doesn't even pay off emotionally.

  • Same question, wondering about next year plans.
Will they continue to run hackathons but with 30% less fundings involved which wouldn’t be as bad as stopping them completely.
What about their new engine will it be discontinued before it was even released?

They have already been pivoting away from VR and doing mobile, so the competitions may not be considered part of VR funding (since they are mobile competitions), and could be part of like mobile funding. That is my hope at least.

Well as competitions are part of the Meta Horizon Creator Program, I believe this will be impacted by budget cuts.

For me, the best-case scenario would be a proportional reduction in either prizes or the number of occurrences—even with a 30% cut, it would remain advantageous—but that’s purely hypothetical.

  • Worlds is pretty much dead in the water. Been like that for a while now. Expect 5x more AI slop.
