Be an Open Source Champion: Win $1M + $500K in additional prizes!

Build and share remixable worlds, public assets and tutorials for the community and win big!

Today, we are launching the third Meta Horizon Creator Competition in 2025 themed Open Source Champions. This competition offers an incredible opportunity to compete for a share of $1M in prizes, plus an additional $500K for newly introduced mini-challenges.

Competition focus

The "Open Source Champions" challenges creators to design and build a high-quality, inspiring and easy to extend remixable world to accelerate the creation process for other creators in the Horizon Worlds community. Remix Worlds is a feature in Horizon that allows creators to make their world(s) clonable and editable by other creators.

In addition to the main focus on building remixable worlds, creators can enter two optional mini-challenges:

  • Interactive asset mini-challenge: Create dynamic, remixable interactive public assets to support other creators.
  • High-quality tutorial mini-challenge: Create engaging, high-quality tutorials to expand the MHCP documentation.

Prizes

  • Best remixable worlds
    • 1st place: $100,000
    • 2nd place: $60,000
    • 3rd place: $50,000
    • Plus additional 32 prizes
  • Mini-challenge winners (interactive asset & tutorial)
    • $500,000 shared among winners

Don’t miss out on this opportunity! The submission window is open from August 14, 2025 to September 10, 2025 at 11:45 PM PDT.

Confirmed it is not available to the public, but when logged in via my account it becomes visible, but is that because of my 2p access, partner access, or MHCP access? The world may never know..

The feature is MHCP only, so the documentation does require logging in to your MHCP account to view.

  • Some of The most important questions are

A- could we purchase assets from Cgtrader website that are royalty free and use them in the remixed world where other players can clone and use them ? Or should we build it our self on blender or gen Ai

B- would meta public asset library be considered as unique   And original if some of us who has no time to bring  assets form elsewhere  would use the public asset library heavily in their work which result in similarity between contributors    ?

so  I don’t know what does meta prefer ..
just checking though cause we wanna be really carful here with the copyrights and originality

although I know that it’s hard for meta to know which asset has which license …I  would wanna keep doing it the cleanest way

It is allowed to submit interactive assets that include meshes purchased from external platforms, as long as doing so does not violate the policies of the platform from which they were downloaded.
Please note that all submitted assets must have interactivity (aka, include scripts) and must be made publicly available to other Horizon users after the competition ends.

I'd like to clarify for myself. If let's say we are going to publish Gun asset where the main accent is our unique code and gun behaviour. Can we use a gun model from the Meta official public assets not to shift the attention to the model itself, or not to use some blocked placeholder.

My guess is if you use external assets, the safest license are Public Domain, Creative Commons Zero or CC BY (Creative Commons Attribution) but make it explicit that anyone that uses the assets need to also give attribution (for CC BY). Possibly need to put license in script or text gizmo.... There may be others but will really have to read the restrictions.

  • Can someone update the devpost it says 1 winner $330k in cash. I do see that in the rules it breaks it down but ya, should be updated to say the amount of winners instead of 1.

The rules are correct that these are broken out. Thank you for flagging the homepage item.
