Adding money to child account

Hello, I am wanting to add money to my son's wallet so he can buy shiny rocks in Gorilla Tag but I don't see how to do that. He has an under 13 account. If he goes to the ATM in Gorilla Tag it says the action is blocked do to age restrictions. I have tried to remove the restriction from his account so I can make the purchase for him but its grayed out. I have even tried to just change his birthday so we can get this done but that doesn't work either. Surely there is a way for a parent to add money or buy items for their kids accounts?

  • Hi Ashabar

I think it's blocked because Gorilla tag is a 12+ game.

So, even if your son had money on his account....the game won't allow him to buy anything.

  • Ugh if that's the case that is super annoying. He will be 12 in March but he badly wants this item that is limited time and I wanted to get it for him as a reward.

I can imagine he is not happy about......but probably there is nothing you can do.

Hi there, Ashabar! We understand wanting to reward your son with the gift of Shiny Rocks being added to his account for Gorilla Tag. We wanted to stop by and provide some additional information regarding adding money and updating the date of birth to your son's Meta account.

You mentioned that he currently has a Parent-Managed Meta account (between the ages of 10 and 12), and since you are unable to add a form of payment to these types of accounts, this is the reason you are unable to purchase Shiny Rocks through his account. Once he ages out of the current Parent-Managed account at 13 years of age, you will then be able to add a form of payment for him, and then he will have the capability to purchase any games with your permission. Please be advised that downloadable or add-on game content like Shiny Rocks is not able to be shared via App Sharing. In regards to updating the date of birth on an account, at this time there is no option to update the date of birth to an older age.

While these options are not available for you and our users at this time, we value your feedback and suggestions on how to improve our products and VR experience. Therefore, we suggest visiting our Ideas Forum, where you can add to an existing thread or create your own, providing our engineering team with ways you would like to see us improve your overall VR experience. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

What is the point of limiting the ability to add an in game payment option to a parent-managed account?  We are already required to authorize access to use apps makes no sense that we can't allow our child to get in game purchases if we authorize it. Frustrated father with a kid about to toss the Meta out the door.

Would love to see that solution but Meta has taken it down . . . seems like they are wanting to further frustrate parents

  • Meta PLEASE fix this today!!!!!  You are causing headaches and pain for every parent who wanted to treat their kid to a VR for Christmas.   We are now on month 3 of trying to simple things like log in, play a game together on 2 headsets, purchase in app items, redeem a gift card, add a credit card, or allow activity for my child as their parent.  You have made all of these more complicated than anyone else I know of.  Please change your software to all kids to purchase items in app with parent permission.   Please allow them to friend request with parent permission.   Please allow them to play games fully and un-restricted if allowed by the parent.   OR please allow parents to change their age to 99.  You are not the parent and you are loosing customers  😞

Hey again Doctorrusty! We just wanted to follow up on your suggestion to have the ability to add money to the child account. Did you take the time to visit the ideas thread created by matt.r.263654 ? Talk to you soon! Have a great day!

  • When I click the mattr idea link I get ...

"The idea you are trying to access is not available"

I definitely want to be able to add funds for my son to spend in GorillaTag.

Every other platform allows me to add and restrict what my children can / cannot spend.

    Please add this functionality!!!

  • Meta please fix this issue!  And dont waste time telling everyone to check out the ideas thread created by Matt.r.863654.

I have struggled with this issue since this time last year and you created 2 options for parents:  Lie about the age of our children (>13) or buy them a Playstation VR.

You could change the settings in the soft ware to allow a child's parent to decide if they are able to connect with friends or add funds from a Meta giftcard.

  • Over a year later, and this still isn't fixed. We bought a $25 gift card at a store (I had my 10 year old buy it with his own money, because I'm teaching him to be financially responsible). When I opened the app on my phone and tried to add the GC money to his account, at least in that case it explicitly told me I cannot redeem GCs to managed accounts. Odd, but OK... So I add the GC to my account, thinking I'd be able to "Send Quest cash" to my child's managed account. When I do that, I get a cryptic message of "Something's not right. Please contact customer support." After hunting around on the site, I found a way to email support, but I wonder if that's any better than shouting into the void.

It is absolutely absurd that managed accounts on this platform cannot hold game bucks. Not even mediated through a parent, apparently. Different issue, but I'm also not able to stream video from his game play on to my iPhone. I thought at the time it's just poor iPhone app support (which would be bad enough), but reading through this thread I would not be surprised if some idiotic parental control blocks it. If that's the case, then not only are parental controls too restrictive, but they're downright broken and don't allow me to actually manage my child's experience.

The parents of his buddy just lied and told the platform their kid is 20. I'm seriously thinking of doing that, or throwing this device in the trash.

Also, whoever from Meta is monitoring this thread keeps referring to a "solution" which is not a solution.

If you don't want kids to do anything on this platform, just come out and say it. But as another poster has noted, Roblox doesn't seem to have an issue taking our money.

This is an absolutely horrendous user experience for parents and kids.

  • "Here's a game that only every adolescent in the world wants to play (adults find it nauseating and horrendous), yet we do everything in our power to restrict what those kids can actually DO in the app!" Yay.

  • Still broken in November 2025. I'd heard that dealing with Meta's parental supervision/controls was frustrating, but that's an understatement. Everything is half-baked & so buggy that it's completely broken. Oh, and the menu options change constantly so that even ChatGPT/etc. is useless as all of its recommendations are already outdated.

  • Meta, learn from Xbox on how Child accounts should be managed.
