Same here - I also use the Move app daily, but would not mind to see it go away if there was a replacement. Unfortunately, there isn't.
FWIW, on Reddit there are many people complaining about it.
I was naive enough to contact the Meta support to ask if there are plans for a new, similar app, but the attendant had no idea of what I was talking about... 🙄
There are a few reasons I can think for Meta to remove the Move app:
- Meta's current focus on hand tracking: if the Move app requires a controller to work, the calories count with hand tracking would be off by a wide margin. I could live with the app counting calories only when using the controllers, but that could create confusion for other users.
- Perhaps Meta plans to sell an external tracker for calorie counting?
- API changes due them opening the Meta Horizon for other platforms could partially explain the "legacy technology", but as you wrote, another API could easily be developed - and perhaps that is exactly what they are doing, but that would break compatibility with current apps
