Oculus Quest 1 – Can't find the right app for PC connection

Hello everyone,

I have an Oculus Quest 1 (first generation) and want to connect it to my PC. The main issue is that I can't seem to find or figure out which specific app is currently needed for this. The official Oculus app no longer seems to support Quest 1, and I'm confused about the alternatives.

Could you please advise:

  1. What specific application is the working solution for connecting a Quest 1 to a PC nowadays? I've heard about Virtual Desktop, SideQuest, possible older versions of Oculus PC software, but I don't understand what exactly to look for or where to download it safely.
  2. Is there a reliable method (step-by-step guide or tutorial) for setting up the connection specifically with this headset?
  3. What difficulties or "pitfalls" might I encounter during the process?

I would be very grateful for any concrete information or links! Thank you.

He just answered....... he can link his Quest 1 to PC using cable link.

The link app was on v83 - link worked -  then he joined PTC in the link app, which updated the app to v85 - link is still working.

He newly set up the Quest 1 a few weeks ago.... not sure if that matters.🤔

Maybe it's your cable, that's why I would try if air link works.... just to rule this out

Have you tried to connect it? Actually I don't believe it won't work anymore.

I'll ask someone with a Quest 1, if he still can link his device.

Hi , thanks for your reply!

Yes, I have tried to connect it. I downloaded the latest version of the PC software (Meta  Horizon Link) from the official website, installed it, and followed the setup instructions. When I connect the headset via the Oculus Link cable, it either isn't recognized at all, or I get an error message in the headset about the connection not being established. It doesn't proceed to the PCVR environment.

Perhaps my Oculus Link cable is faulty, or maybe I'm missing a specific step in the setup process for the Quest 1. Any insight from your contact with a Quest 1 owner would be incredibly helpful! I'm eager to hear what method or software version they are using successfully.

Thank you again for looking into this!

To add a bit more context: I haven't used the headset in a very long time — it was just sitting around. I knew official support had ended, but I thought, "Hey, at least I might still be able to connect it to my PC to play some games." And now I'm stuck like this.

I did some more searching online, and many people are saying that the new Meta Horizon Link (the renamed/updated PC app) does not support Oculus Quest 1. But, confusingly, the Meta website lists "Meta Horizon Link" as the PC app for all Quest devices. This contradiction is exactly what's causing my confusion.

It seems the official cable method might indeed be a dead end now. I'm starting to think that perhaps Virtual Desktop is the only reliable path forward for connecting this older headset. Any confirmation on this or a pointer to the correct, legacy PC software would be incredibly helpful.

That's fantastic news and a huge relief — thank you so much for checking with your friend! Knowing that a fresh setup on v85 still works is the best confirmation I could get.

You were right on the money about the cable. I finally got up, bought a proper USB 3.2 cable, made sure everything was updated… and it worked right away. The Link started without a hitch. Turns out it really was just the cable (and maybe a bit of user error on my end during the first attempts).

Thanks again — really appreciate the help.

Glad, you got it working again, have fun!

........ and enjoy your Quest home before starting link....... I'm always a bit jealous when I see one of the clips he made from a Quest 1 home 😅
