Please explain how game sharing works?

We bought 3 Oculuses for Christmas for our family of 4.

On my wife's device, she enabled sharing with my son's Oculus.  He can see her purchased games.

When I log int onto my wife's device and switch user to me, I can't see any purchased games.  She says this is because you can only share with 1 device, and that is my son's device.  Sounds like our 3rd Oculus is "stranded" on it's own.

We've dropped $1200 on Oculus hardware.  I expected that when the "main account" bought games, then the rest of the family would be able to play them also.

I guess we could just log into all 3 oculuses with my wife's account, but then if you have any games with saved progress you break that functionality.

How does the sharing work?

  • @OculusSupport will you please weigh in on this? It seems wildly unfair to parents who bought multiple devices for families with multiple children. We’ve wasted so many days since Xmas trying to figure this out on our devices to no avail. Please advise on how we can do this within our families. We can do it on Spotify, Apple, etc. How do we do it on Oculus?

  • My wife says that you can share your library with one other account.  If you do this, then the games you purchased on *your* Oculus account are also visible on the other account.  But you can't play the same game at the same time, she says.

We have 4 people in our family and 3 Oculus devices.  I just re-purchased Demeos so we could play as a family tonight with all 3 devices.

It's not quite as bad as Steam (Steam allows sharing your library but if anyone is using ANY SINGLE GAME the entire library is locked from sharing with anyone else).  Sounds like Oculus lets 2 people share a library.  This isn't very helpful if you have two parents with children.

Absolutely - the problem is you can’t play against each other or even the same games at the same time at all. Hopefully @oculussupport will tell us how we can do this so we can play against our family members in our own homes. Thanks maillemaker !

So does this mean that to play multiplayer within the same house, we still have to buy games two or even 3 times?

No, all 3 others can play as long as they log into primary acct on thier device, which can be done simultaneously

At least that’s my understanding but then again, it’s very confusing, I might be wrong, but I have watched over 15 tutorial videos and how tos, including the rules and fine print of app share. GL lol. We will all need it

  • No, Each device who shares with primary will be able to start new data on that game and save data separately on all 3 different devices

  • As of now.. you can at most play the same game at the same time like co-op or versus each other is two devices. In order to do that, both oculus devices should aim to have two accounts (main and alt). Both devices need to main the one with all the games library and at least one of them needs to turn app sharing on (very important step. I'm going to use elven assassin as an example. To play together on EA, one device hops on the main account and the other device hops on the alt but (app sharing is on for this one). This will allow both users to play together with each other at the same time because it reads it as two different profiles playing the game.

I also have 3 oculus quest and kind of got screwed over when the developers updated (nerfed) switched it so you can't have 4 accounts logged in at the same time (2 max). There is some possible workarounds but not worth the hassle. Because app sharing is limited to one other device, the third device can't use the main account without double dipping the main profile. If you do this, in EA and other games you'll get a pop-up saying multiple devices can't be play this game at the same time. My work around it is pressing the oculus home button when it comes up every 1-2 minutes and it works but very annoying. I limit my quest purchases now every since quest update and nerf this feature, I get it was an experimental feature but kind of false advertisement to give us a feature that was nice and then nerf it for money reasons lol.

So bottom line, until oculus reconsider bringing back the more improved version of app sharing/family sharing the most you can play shared games at the same time is 2 devices (limited to the 1 max capacity of app sharing enabled), without getting constant pop-ups of multi devices unable to play at the same time. So at least for now you can save some money and treat this as buy one get one free when sharing it with one other family member. But yeah we bought 3, so our only real option is to buy the game on two user profile to play 3 at the same time (up to 4 if you enable app sharing for the other profile that buys the game). I hope that helps..

  • Trying to follow all of this gives me a headache.

What I want to do is have any of 4 family members log into any of 3 oculus devices and play any game that my family has bought.

Trying to keep track of which device is shared with which other device, who has the game you want to play, and who is logged in to the device is maddening.

I'm so frustrated with this stuff I don't even want to play with it.

  • OK, let's see if I have this right.

If I have ONE Oculus device, then you can have ONE Admin account and add up to TWO other accounts on that device.  And whoever is wearing the device can play any game on that device owned by the Admin.  Is that right?

But if I have THREE Oculus devices, with the SAME ADMIN on all three devices, then the Admin can share their games with ONE other device.

So if I have TWO admins, Admin 1 for device 1 and 2, and, and Admin 2 for device 3, then in theory I should have to buy each game twice so that all 3 devices can play.

    Is that right?

Of course, someone playing vs or co-op also always has to be the admin acct on the non-app sharing device as well, which doesn’t work well either in your situation.  With time however, I believe all will be well!

Here's what I'm doing at the moment.. and just know it's a sad workaround given that Oculus changed their experimental features with Family/app sharing. It used to be able to run 4 games at the same time, I was playing with my family and a friend so 4 oculus quest 2 devices. Before you could just have the main share the account and 3 others could play at the same time, it was the best, exactly what we were drawn to or believe the potential of family app sharing. They nerf (gave us a weaker version) of this feature so that the max you share an account and device at the same time would be "2".

Option 1: We wait for a potential update where they bring this feature back where you can share your main account to up to 3 other users that can also play at the same time, a very helpful budget feature for a family of 3-4. This is probably unlikely, in the end, it is probably all about $. That's the only thing that makes sense in terms of why they nerf such a great feature.

Option 2 (this is what I'm doing; requires only 1 Copy of the game): Continue to share your main library account games with other family member devices. In this example, I'll use Elven Assasin (EA) game. Device A (Main) turns on APP sharing in settings and logs on to Account B and starts EA. Account B, C and D all need to log on the main user account A. Now the problem lies that Devices B,C,D are all hopping on to Account A (main game profile) A all at the same time. So that's when you get "Multiple Devices Can't Access This App At The Same Time". The stupid workaround so far, is hitting the "oculus home right button" and it'll exit that pop-up. Depending on the game, the pop-up will come up potentially every 10 seconds - 2 minutes. It felt like EA it was popping up every 2 minutes but all 4 of us were able to play together at the same time.

Option 3: (requires 2 copies of the game) Using EA as the example again.

Main Device A enables APP sharing and then logs onto Account B. Therefore Device A has access to EA and can play while on Account B.  Device B logs onto account A and launch EA to play the same game as Device A.
*** Device C another main user, has bought the game and turn on APP sharing. Device C logs onto account D while launching EA.  Device D hops onto Account C (2nd main), and can play at the same time with Device C but in addition also devices A and B as well.

I hope that makes sense, so far option 3 is what seems to be the only way without glitching pop-up errors unless they decide to nerf or buff this app/family sharing feature again.  It's definitely a cheap power move on the developer's end. I have yet to buy 2 copies of every game for my family because that's insane. Maybe when certain 4+ player co-op/multi-games are in a bundle sale I'll consider it. But for now, option 2 of hitting the oculus home button is one way to play together with 1 purchase at the price of hitting that home button very often.

      I hope that helps.

  • We really aren't interested in being able to share games on the same device.  We bought 3 devices so we can all play together/simultaneously.  I mean, there are 4 of us but we bought 3 oculus devices so at 3 of us can play together at a time.  But it seems like if one headset owns the game, then only one other headset can share it.

What game are you trying to play with 3 devices at the same time? I'll see if I have it and if the option 2 I mentioned above works around that game.  The option of where you only have 1 purchase of the game, but sharing the account user library to 2-3 other devices.

  • Oculus just needs to understand that these things are family toys.  When I buy a board game I only have to buy it once for everyone in the family to play it.  Oculus should be the same way.

  • We ended up making bogus accounts to get some semblence of functionality.  But game sharing still sucks and I think we ended up buying multiples of some games so that we could play (which is what they want you to do - keep milking the consumer!)   However by now the shine has worn off of the VR and I don't think I've used it in 6 months or more.  My son and wife play occasionally.  My daughter never got into it.

For me, the biggest turnoff for VR games is they are just too much physical work compared to a traditional computer game.  I play computer games to relax, not for a workout.
