Trying to use standalone VRChat as environment to use my computer in. running into problems.

Context

I use my virtual reality headset, a meta quest 3, and previously 3S, as a screen for my gaming laptop, and use it to have multiple computer screens to play video games on my laptop on.

I use a software called Virtual Desktop, which gives me 3 computer screens in vr, which are connected to my gaming laptop, allowing me to see my computer in vr, up to 3 computer screens, and play PC video games.

Note. NOT PCVR.

I wanted to do the same thing, have computer screens and use my computer in vr, but in VRChat. My gaming laptop is not powerful enough for PCVR VRChat and PC video games at the same time, so i want to do it in standalone VRChat on meta quest 3

thats where i am running into problems.

1...   VRChat and Virtual Desktop can not run together. Opening one closes the other, in my meta quest 3

2...    the built-in Meta Remote Desktop works in VRChat, but the keyboard passthrough does not work, meaning i can not see my bluetooth keyboard and mouse in VRChat. I tried pairing it to my vr headset, my laptop, hovering my hands over the keyboard, checking settings, and it does not work. The keyboard passthrough wont show up in Meta Quest 3 standalone VRChat, meaning i can use my computer in standalone VRChat using built-in meta remote desktop, but i can not see my keyboard or mouse.

......

Request:

1 -...Make standalone meta quest 3 VRChat work with the keyboard passthrough feature of built-in meta remote desktop, so i can use my computer in vrchat and see my bluetooth keyboard and mouse

2 ... Make virtual desktop and standalone meta quest 3 VRChat work together, instead of opening one forcing the other to close

3 ... Create a app for standalone meta quest 3, to create a keyboard passthrough portal in standalone meta quest 3 VRChat, so i can use my computer in VRChat using built-in meta remote desktop, and actually see my keyboard and mouse.

......

Additionally, it would be nice if there is a Geforce now cloud gaming app for meta quest 3 that also works in Meta Quest 3 standalone VRChat

...

The Goal:

1 ... The ability to use VR as multiple screens for gaming laptops/desktops, allowing users to play normal PC games on virtual screens in VR. Basically a computer monitor, but in vr, not real life, and its multiple computer monitors / screens

2 ...The ability to use standalone Meta Quest 3 VRChat as a environment to play PC games in, by connecting to my local gaming laptop (or desktop) and having multiple screens for it appear in VR.

3 ... The ability to use VRChat as a environment to play PC games in using Geforce now

requirement... Must be able to see bluetooth keyboard and mouse in standalone Meta Quest 3 VRChat. Not talking about the $100 Canadian Dollar expensive keyboards that have official support. I mean cheaper $30 or $40 generic bluetooth keyboard and mouses.

  • Short answer: what you’re trying isn’t really possible right now due to Meta/VRChat limitations.

    • Virtual Desktop + VRChat (standalone) → can’t run together (Quest allows only one immersive app at a time)
    • Keyboard passthrough in VRChat → not supported inside standalone VRChat (only works in system apps)
    • Custom passthrough portals/apps inside VRChat → not possible due to sandbox restrictions
    • GeForce NOW inside VRChat → no native support

    What actually works:

    • ✔ Use Virtual Desktop alone for best multi-screen + keyboard visibility
    • ✔ Or use PCVR VRChat (if hardware allows) + desktop overlay tools

    Reality:
VRChat standalone isn’t designed to be a full “desktop environment,” so your use case is limited by OS-level restrictions.

    Best workaround:
Use Virtual Desktop for gaming/productivity, and VRChat separately—not together.

Hope that clears it up 👍

  • Also a additional note, that might not belong in this thread

i was playing a game called eve online on my gaming laptop, while using my Quest 3 as a screen, using app called Virtual Desktop.

My mouse started lagging in VR, but not on the screen of my gaming laptop. I might have set the virtual desktop bitrate too high.

I disconnected and reconnected to my laptop in VR in Virtual Desktop, and EVE Online freezed.

I already am in touch with eve online support and have sent them logs + support payload, even re-created the issue and freezing with the logging tool running.

Your post is insane. It reads like someone trying to run a Formula 1 race using a lawnmower and then filing a complaint with the track officials when it doesn't hit 300 km/h.

You're stacking standalone VRChat, Virtual Desktop, passthrough, and remote desktop like you're assembling a high‑tech sandwich, and somehow the only ingredient you're refusing to upgrade is the one that actually matters: your laptop.

      The Quest isn't malfunctioning.

      VRChat isn't malfunctioning.

Nothing is malfunctioning except the expectation that your current hardware is capable of doing any of this.

At this point, the only real mystery is how many more layers you plan to add before accepting the obvious: you need a better laptop or an actual gaming PC.

No amount of settings tweaks or forum brainstorming is going to turn your current machine into something it isn't.

      It's not a software issue.

      It's not a compatibility issue.

It's a 'your hardware gave up before you even started' issue.

I know that my gaming laptop is not strong enough for PCVR.
But i think this can be fixed in a different way.

Instead of buying a gaming desktop, Meta and VRChat can just add keyboard passthrough to VRChat.

Sounds like you are shutting down ideas that could have actually worked if you actually let them happen and be developed.

Instead of shutting down new ideas, why not let the developers research and see if its possible to do? If you never let people try new things, you will just be stuck in the Stone Age where we didnt even know how to cook food because people like you stop others from doing new things.

  • Sorry, i posted here after being told that i should post my request here, in the community forums, so the Meta Developers can read it easier and consider working on it.

Is this Meta Community Forum not read by the Meta Developers? It sounds like everyone is telling me its impossible to do what i requested and completely ignoring the fact that i know its impossible, and am instead asking the Meta Developers to consider working on it to make it possible.

ElectricBarnOwl5438 This is purely a user forum. There are no Meta developers or employees on this forum. The solution to your problem already exists. Get yourself a more powerful system. Meta have outlined the requirements necessary. Do you seriously think they have the time and resources available to make your system work?  Your request is similar to trying to make a Ferrari out of a Fiat 128. It's not going to happen.

Huh, thats weird. Meta Support Email told me that these Meta Community Forums are read by the developers. Maybe not responded to, but read.
