Best possible codec for video and audio on the Quest

Hi wondering if there is a recommended codec for runtime video and audio clips on the QUEST or maybe a list of what to avoid...

  • Well, the CPU is a Snapdragon 835 and according to wikipedia it support the following video and audio:

  • Video:
  • H.264, H.265, VP9 UHD/30fps encoding and UHD/60fps 10-bit decoding
  • High-dynamic-range video support(HDR10)/Ultra HD Premium (only Decoding)

  • Audio:
  • DSD and 32-bit/384kHz PCM audio support with WCD9341 codec

  • Depending on if it is VR180, flat 3D  or 2D video you aim for the resolution will differ but I'd say it will always be good to use h.265 with 60fps.

  • Old thread but just to confirm my experience - H.265 will lag on the Quest. H.264 works fine, as does VP9. If you find a H.265 video you want to convert, I'd recommend Handbrake. Also, if you search for "Handbrake Oculus Go preset", a redditor has created a preset for the best codec settings (Go has the same capabilities as Quest for media playback). Hope that helps!
