$600 computer vs PS4 for VR

I'm debating the Oculus rift vs Sony Morpheus for VR. Can anyone comment on which would be the better option? If I go with the oculus rift I'll need to buy a desktop, because right now I have a low-end business laptop with integrated video.

  • Well, the Morpheus isn't going to be out until 2016 if I remember correctly. If you can stand to wait that long you could probably build a PC that would be able to run VR well for $600, but if you're planning on buying one now, I think you would have to take some time scouring ebay to find deals on used parts and do some overclocking if you wanted to do much in VR at that budget. Even that might not be enough if you have to buy a case and a monitor as well. If you can't increase your budget I would either wait for prices on modern hardware to drop or just get the Morpheus when it launches.

Lol so what is your pick? Assume the wait time isn't a big issue.
  • If you can wait until Morpheus is out then I would wait to see what it's really capable of. Vive will be out at that point, hopefully CV1, it's hard to say how things will be at this point. Doesn't really matter considering you aren't going to want to be building your computer until around that time anyway.

For consumer PC VR, $600 is probably too low.

However, for Unity VR development right now with an Oculus Rift DK2, you might be able to have a decent experience with something similar to:

    CPU
    Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor
    $109.99

    Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-H81M-H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard
    $43.98

    Memory
    Kingston 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
    $31.74

    Storage
    Crucial MX100 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
    $64.95

    Video Card
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card
    $196.98

    Case
Rosewill FBM-01 MicroATX Mini Tower Case
    $29.99

    Power Supply
Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply
    $47.50

    Total: $525.13

Price doesn't include OS, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and HMD.

I'm on a similar spec machine with AMD FX 3.4 GHz and a GeForce 760. I mostly consume my own content, and sometimes content from Oculus Share. While performance isn't the best, it isn't terrible either and I get 75+ fps in many demos.

Yeah, but the Morpheus is going to be built with the PS4's limitations in mind and developers will only create experiences the hardware can handle, I would imagine the CV1 and Vive are going to depend upon more power than the PS4 can output.
