Thank you for your very verbose response. I still did not see though if media other than 3d animation can be used. My main focus is on using a couple/few GoPro cameras mounted to a helmet for stereoscopic video to create virtual walk through's. Is that possible?

Awesome! Now can this be done with say, Sony Vegas and converted for the rift?

While I am not familiar with Vegas other than knowing the name, it should be possible. All you need to do is to convert the dual video's into a Rift friendly format, and then use a VR media player to play it back.

In theory, a fish-eye filter with chromatic aberration should do the trick, however, you run into people with different IPD profiles. Check out any number of the Rift game-play videos, take one frame of those, and try to duplicate it.
