Have you never push started a car before?  Tough to do with an auto, but a manual is pretty easy, I've done it a few times on my own pushing with one foot out the door.

And a good battery should still be able to start a car after a few months.  Especially in older cars that don't have a lot of parasitic drain on the battery.   After a couple years it would be unlikely, but in a few cases when they were specifically looking for cars they brought a charged battery with them.

Either way, it looked like it had been a good few years since they got to the car in season 3, since the apocalypse started.

Watch part of the first episode but never got into it, 

A bigger issue is likely to be that the gas will decay over time, and probably won't be able to run the engine after a year or two. At least not very well.

But, yeah, we watched the first season and gave up. It's free on Netflix, but I've yet to feel an urge to continue from there. We did read the comic for a while, but gave up around the time they left the prison.
