Automatic laser 3d modeling systems + the Oculus Rift

I did a quick google search for automatic 3d modeling and I found this

I'm sure it would be really expensive, and probably far off, but people keep talking about wireless Oculus Rifts and I keep thinking that would probably make you walk into the wall a lot, but what if programs could use real 3d data of the actual world around you, to the point where it would not only pick up the entire room, but it would pick up your arms, legs and everything too. We could play video games like they did in that episode of Futurama when they go on the internet.

this paper might be a little clearer (has better pictures) :)

Or do it the other way around, project virtual images onto the real world. Like changing a cement sidewalk to look like cobblestones and walls to look like wood. Heck, even change entire buildings to look medieval. Hang an giant planet on the sky, turn people into pokemon, etc. You could customize reality to your liking.
  • That sounds cool too, but hard to project on dark surfaces with current technology. I think having lasers scan your body to see where your hands, etc are is probably very possible with current technology.
  • Maybe I used the incorrect word, change "project" to "superimpose". The HMD would take imagery from outside via stereo camera and received the laser data to create a 3d model of the environment, once that is modeled then it can be changed into whatever you want. So you could make your neighborhood look like a futuristic city, or turn a rainy day into a sunny one.
