Building a custom VR headset for a project

Im making a costume for halloween and the head has almost no visibilty. So I wanted to create a vr headset with my phone as a display and a designated vr camera outside the helmet to capture video and send it to my phone and give me the ability to see outside. any advice on how to pull this off?
