Can you play games at 1080p and 2k on a 4k television?

Up until 2 or 3 weeks ago, a 1080 was the best card on the market. Dude, people have been using way older and worse graphics cards to run 4k content for YEARS already. A friend of mine still runs two GTX760's in SLi and uses plenty of 4k content. If you don't know if you can run it, then maybe you shouldn't buy it without doing more research for yourself...
