To be blunt, I am personally sickened by this aspect of how the world works; and it is holding humanity back, not helping it. Though I am stuck dealing with these aspects myself, I'd rather all this garbage behavior and 'way of being' end, as it is not the kind of psychosis that is going to ever do anything good for humanity.
Interestingly enough, the vast majority of the folks stuck in these sorts of situations feel the same way as I do, but we cannot easily end it, until some form of open human community forms -one that is free of the murderous scarcity mentality that seems to currently occupy the whole mind of humanity. Until we burn the sociopaths out of all levels of human endeavor, this will continue as normal (unending) fare.
KBK these are powerful ideas and it inspires me to return here and chat with you and I hope foster some good ideas and debate. Perhaps we don't have to burn out the sociopaths, but merely convince them it is in thier own best interests to join and advance the borg collective. Why attack a killer who is better armed than you, when you can peacefully wait them out or just bypass them? Mandela lived to 95 years old, thats pretty old, he was a slave and imprisoned for a long time KBK, what almost 2.5 decades? He got out though, and he changed things for the better.
http://i.imgur.com/TPTKI5i.jpgHere is a picture of young open source Jedi Palmer, with his Darth Luckey Shadow after he matures. A lot of people gave to Palmer freely, to help all of us on this planet, he chose to take the "open source" project down the path of capitalist corruption. Are we going to have a better VR future because he chose to go that way, or would things be different if he had chosen to keep the project totally and completely open source in a way that might make jaron lanier or stallman proud. Its possible, maybe Palmer took the best path, not keeping things totally open source. Now he is in the trap you so eloquently describe though, the company has needs, beyond people, reputation, secrecy, so that other nefarious abstract entitites will deal with it (other companies) and further down the rabbit hole we go NEO. The companies have become more important than the human beings beneath them. Perhaps something doesn't feel right, all this obscurity and opaqueness perhaps is for the best though? They have made amazing progress, I hold Kevin Williams in very high regard and in previous talks at other boards even he didn't seem to predict the fast advances Palmer and team has pulled out of the ether! LOL! Yet many talks with a hacker at dragoncon, Jonny X, and him telling me this is a real evil in our society, companies being given citizenship status, was pure darkness.
Would it have been a bad choice, with slower progress if things had remained totally open source? Does all this patent sillyness going on all over the place really enrich all 8 billion of us? I have friends and colleagues that either through total secrecy of their work (that they do for USAF or pentagon), or the ability to patent it, feed themselves and their families, they would fight you to the bitter end to keep the current economic situation enforced. They are for the most part rational scientists, the problem only gets worse when you expand it out to the general populace and entrenched bankster types.
I have made my thoughts on Neil public for the most part, so I am no lackey of his, but I was there when he gave Nvidia the shaft at siggraph in new orleans, and I was proud he did it. It needed doing, and Neil was just the guy to punch them in the nutz. One of their people came up to him (because he wouldn't let them present) and started cussing him like a punk, the guy was so enraged, I really thought he was about to punch Neil. We need more people like Neil doing things like that, sticking it to the dark forces of this planet, stinging them like an ancient socrates used to do in Athens. A lot of people wouldn't have said NO to the mighty NVDA. It took a Neil rejecting the status quo.
I have watched Palmer change over the years from who I thought was one of the coolest most passionate people I was blessed to know, to someone who now is trapped by the same dark forces enslaving you, (for all of you that think I hate or attack Palmer, its the system around him forcing his hand that disgusts me) I challenge him and iribe every single chance I can about what they have done to "promote" VR under the system we all are existing under. Wormslayer over at reddit isn't content to let the community judge for themselves what posts of mine they wish to read relating to that, he actively goes in and removes my posts now (even after Palmer was generous enough to give me some reddit gold - thanks Palmer), Wormslayer has to do your thinking for you I guess, and censoring for you, you are all overgrown babies after all that can't do it for yourself yes? I don't need Wormslayer censoring for me, I am a big boy, I can do my own thought control (sigh)
KBK modern civilization has a lot going for it, people live a lot longer, for the most part people live a lot wealthier. Top economists have told me that our modern hybrid capitalist system is the best, using the sociopath's own greed to advance society for us all. U seem to disagree, maybe thinking something is terribly wrong with the whole rube goldberg contraption as you express above. I would like to know your path old wise Jedi that led you here, the specific experiences and history that got you to this belief, so I can learn from your past and understand. What is so wrong about a system that for the most part gives 8 billion people on the planet a much better life than just 100 years ago (where what, the average person died on average around 40 years old?)
I have read some postings of Geek Master on other forums about Jesus, I don't think he supports crony capitalism, you say you don't like the system either, I sure don't either, my experience being what I have seen at the pentagon and military, to what I saw while employed at IBM, and on down the line through so many other companies and experiences. It disgusted me to no end to see technologies and knowledge be censored or shelved while real human beings perished because it could molest next quarters profits if released too soon.
If there are so many passionate people that are so disgusted with how the system entraps, ensnares, and enslaves us all, what are your thoughts on re-engineering it? Let me tie Carmack into this thought process too, he was having a field day on his twitter account bitching about the absolute and total stupidity of NASA NTRS info being more easily accessible to north korea than the public citizens of the USA!! How the "orphans of apollo" guy was shut down by corrupt and evil tyrants. How even carmack himself and his armadillo aerospace initiative was effectively cut at the ballz. As much as I appreciate Carmack working on VR, if he was passionate about space and asteroid defenses, and certainly Carmack is a very brilliant person, I think its a damn shame he is not working on what he really loved because so many dark forces were working against him instead of working FOR him aerospace wise. Certainly defending the planet from asteroids should be a higher priority than VR yes?
I have been reading your frustrations for awhile now KBK.
http://www.reddit.com/r/virtualreality/comments/1gulud/palantir_now_funding_oculus_is_this_a_good/cdffhsn?context=3 I had so many good posts relating to very similar memes here, but Wormslayer chose to erase them, but you say you cannot EASILY end the system, the problem is massive. A long time ago, on a message board far away (MTBS3D) this young jedi named Palmer showed up wondering what the fuck was wrong with VR and HMD's, why was shit still so farked, the good high FOV systems costing 10K's, but he kept plugging along, along with many others, and things are changing and have changed, so with that example, I say that is proof positive, that you KBK, if you will just reject the current political/economic/social system, instead of throwing your hands up to what seems an impossible task, can make massive changes in the future for us all. All it takes KBK is one passionate person to change this planet, if the time is right. I used to think there were 2 certain things in life, death and taxes, but with GOOG's Calico and researching telomerase perhaps death will be solved soon, and the economic capitalist system will perish as it disenfranchises more and more humans while people like you choose to reject it and topple it at every opportunity, you are not alone KBK, there are so many working with you behind the scenes to bring about progressive change. Stay positive and please tell me your thoughts on what we all can do to overthrow the entrenched forces of the dark side? Saying it can't be done or is too hard is not a way forward.
I was recently trying to get Bruce Boxleitner to come to steam dev days and see about making his lantern city project a VR TV series, this led to learning some interesting history about the start of babylon 5, and how Roddenberrys wife Majel Barret pulled some pretty evil shit to try and shut them down at the very beginning, I didn't like reading that KBK, I met her many times at a lot of coventions and was really taken with her, and it hurt to find out she did those things, but babylon 5 prevailed, even with all the dark powerful forces working against it from the star trek fan world. From Carmack, down to Palmer, and you, me and geek master and so many others, I think we all agree some drastic changes need to be made, I will go out fighting for those changes to the bitter end.
As WEEV told me KBK, they may kill certain people, there is a long list of people they have killed in the past, jailed, threatened. WEEV is sitting in jail now, like Mandela sat in jail before him. You start talking about taking away the bankster's yachts and their cronies, or marginalizing their power or control, they are not going to like it, but we have to get some changes in our political and legal system. What specific laws do you think we need to change first to start making some traction? Patent laws? The intractibility of the two party system (where other nations have multiple parties)? The lack of optimal currency areas and too much monetary fiat control? Popularized internet forums where too few have censorship power over too many? Where do we start KBK? As you say KBK, there are a lot of us, wanting to escape this slavery, and some new society needs to form an "open human community" I have hope KBK, I was at oaksterdam when the feds raided richard lee, they took all his plants. (So much for Obama and his shroom gang roots) but I am in Seattle now, and they just had the 1 year party at the Space Needle for the FREEDOM for an adult human to choose if they want to eat a plant or not. The tyrants can be stopped.
