Community Badges & Gamification

A developer friend was looking for some information yesterday and I directed them to the community forums. This visit triggered an email that notified me I had earned a badge. I've been around forever, but only just started referencing this forum more because I'm working on my own VR game now. πŸ˜ƒ

It turns out I have 21 badges! I love this.

For reference, I'm the kind of worker who will volunteer for work so it can be assigned to me on Slack because when it's done I get to mark "task complete" and enjoy a flying narwhale or unicorn or other visual treat.  πŸ˜

These badges are fantastic. Not fancy, but I like the idea of doing things to earn a reward. πŸ… Most things in life can be gamified and people are missing out on many opportunities to give & receive joy if they don't leverage that. Regardless of someone's age or other demographics, gamification and being rewarded for your efforts is appealing.  πŸ˜

Anyway, I think it's very cool.

Favorite ones I've earned are "Problem Solver" & "Veteran 5" (5 or more yrs in the community).

Do other people enjoy this, too? If so, how many badges do you have and do you have a favorite?

  • Hi Hasko7 πŸ™‚

I do like achievements in games....I don't like the badges in the forum that much.

It makes kids texting nonsense letter combinations just for posting so they'll get a badge..... not only once, but several times, because the next badge is waiting.πŸ™„

After telling you I don't like them..... my fav is "All stars"πŸ˜‚

Honestly I hadn't even thought of kids being on the forums. I can see where posting that way would be annoying, but while I was thinking about that, I realized it's kind of like the digital version of things middle aged or older adults did when we were young. Like digging through the cereal to get to the toy at the bottom. Or buying 10 individual pieces of 3 cent candy at the gas station so you'd get a stamp on the card that then earned you a free slushie. 😁  I was very poor so I knew all the tricks to stay within the rules, but earn a reward.  πŸ˜…

Anyway... I guess it's kind of the same except within the digital realm. Probably annoying for us, but honestly there's enough stress in the world and if it gives them some joy then for me it's easy to overlook such things.

I really did like your last line. It literally made me chuckle out loud.  πŸ˜†

  • I've got a few. :)

Sadly I don't have Veteran 5 (5 years on forum) because I helped test one of the forum updates before it went public, and it reset my account start date. I've been here for 12 years.

Currently there are 11 badges that are now impossible for anybody to achieve due to forum changes. The 5 Think Tank and 5 Brainstorm badges require the Ideas forum which was closed. The MVP badge needs the MVP program, which was discontinued.

Oh I'm sad to have missed that one. I would've liked it!

That's too bad about the veteran badge, but the good thing is that you will be able to get it again eventually. And such interesting information about the ones that are now gone. Thanks for sharing!
