Enthusiasts vs Developers

When lurking in the general forum, sometimes I feel this angry vibe against enthusiasts who buy the rift but don't plan to make anything.

Personally, I think that enthusiasts and developers are on the same spectrum (just different points on that same spectrum). It isn't good to put enthusiasts in a box, because all enthusiasts have the potential of converting into a developer.

Anyways, what are your thoughts?

Also when does an enthusiast who makes things become a "real developer"?

  • I don't like the fact that I have to wait so long because the team is flooded with orders for people who only want to play with it. Other then that it's not that big a deal.
  • I feel it is important for enthusiast to play the crap out of the content and complain about the bugs so the developers can know what to fix.

Without enthusiasts there would be no developers! And without developers there would be no enthusiasts!

They are like night and day... can't have one without the other!

    Hahah, this exactly!

Now if the device came with -zero- content- and no real access to content outside of making your own?
In that case ONLY developers would be interested.

With the Rift it's the middle ground.. so it's valuable to both groups.

It's good to remember many enthusiasts fund developer projects as well.. win/win

I'm an enthusiast, and I don't understand all the hate.

I've a lot of time for developers, they make the technology progress and I love messing around with the demos and games that others have spent a great deal of time creating. But you need us enthusiasts, we are the ones who try out your hard work and give you feedback which can be vital, we go hand in hand.

I would love to have a go at developing but I dont have the skills, im in a full time job and I have a young son to look after. I just dont have the time.

I hear that, and I am also an enthusiast at this point. I think it takes inspiration to take the time to become good enough to do anything, especially something as complicated as game/software development. I have tried to learn several different programming languages over the years, just so that when I did find something that really interested me I wouldn't be starting from scratch, and since I found the rift I've felt more inspired than ever to make an amazing computing experience. So I think enthusiasm is good, it leads you where you need to be to become a developer.

What do you call someone who's not exactly an enthusiast, and also not exactly a developer? Enthuloper? Develiast? :?:

The same thing you call everyone else: a Rifter ;)
