Game Idea: Droideka

My imagination is not limited by copyright issues :P

*First Person Perspective/Combat Focused Gameplay*

Instead of spelling out the whole idea (back story and all) I am just going to focus in on what interests me most about this idea

behold the droideka

what interests me the most is the "ball" form. you could map locomotion in ball form entirely to positional tracking data alone.

for instance
-lean forward to roll forward
-lean backwards to roll backwards/decelerate
-lean side to side to steer ball when its in motion
-when you are not in motion you can rotate ball by turning your head?
? = would need to be tested...

FYI: perspective inside the ball would be like that of a seated observer balanced and stabilized like a gyro!

secondly when droideka is in walking form this would be more like "tank mode" forced freelook. locomotion is mapped entirely to input device only. so therefore where you look is where you aim. but locomotion in walking form is very slow and cumbersome.

and of course you could switch between these forms manually in a matter of seconds entirely in first person perspective :)

how badass would that be?

  • i really want players to be able to bob and weave to dodge incoming fire in ball mode....if it doesn't throw off the simplicity too much, when ball is stationary, leaning side to side will make the ball roll side to side.

    So Marble Madness VR?

Makes me a little worried about motion sickness and neck pain...

This is a big limitation to what gameplay VR controls of today allow: You can't use the sensor to control anything but the view, but if you use a gamepad for view rotation; people don't really move their head, catch 22.

Basically the only thing you can make today is cockpit-less flight simulators, and with DK2 cockpit enabled flight simulators.

I think the haptic feedback glove will soon be announced, then we will be able to make "god" games too!

at first i was thinking of a platforming experience. almost like a first person 'Monkey Balls' clone. but i changed my mind. i decided to strive for a more combat focused gameplay experience. so it would be more like a battle arena then that of a platforming game.

honestly im leaning towards competitive multiplayer as the ultimate goal of this game idea. assuming the battle system holds up well to PvP combat that is.

if my intuition is correct motion sickness should not be a problem in this set up. keep in mind when in 'ball form' it would feel like you are a seated observer much like sitting in a cockpit. and this would be stabilized and centered much like that of a gyro. where no matter what direction or how fast the outer structure is rolling the center structure is always stabilized by gravity (to a certain extent).

it would need to be tested to know for sure though...

key point: you don't actually roll with the ball. you stay centered and stabilized as the ball rolls around you. thus moving you forwards or backwards in the process.

if there is enough interest in this idea, perhaps i will compose a post outlining the backstory.

however i am on the fence about something though....

should this be an arcade game? utilizing location specific power ups with generic characters that never level up?
or be more like an RPG game? where players could purchase upgrades to their droideka with exp points?

P.S: I am keeping an eye on haptics :) but for now i am focused on creating awesome VR games that can be enjoyed with just a mouse/KB or game controller.
