Here's a Prime Example of Rubbish Bedroom Journalism that's Killing Gaming

Anyone can set up a website/youtube channel these days and proclaim to be the bringer of news to fellow gamers. True and steadfast with your, "the gamer" interests at heart. Yet this means that a lot of stuff is made up out of nothing or twisted to become a hit grabbing masterpiece which isn't journalism at all - you've seen the mountains made out of the Oculus vs Revive molehills. It's likely some  of those people don't class themselves as journalists and just see themselves as presenters of "teh facts".  So here we are, a news story that seems to suggest some skulduggery with Microsoft's stance on its Play Anywhere games.

Quote Headline:

Microsoft Backtracks on “No Xbox Exclusives” – Caught Stealth Editing Post

Oooh the drama.

According to the story, Microsoft has now changed , or should I say "stealth edited" a blog post which previously hinted that all of its first party games could be "Play Anywhere" - that's appearing on Xbox One and Windows 10 at the same time with just one purchase required to play both versions and with cross saves and achievements etc. (a good thing in my opinion). Stop the press, they've been "caught" red handed the little tykes. Call the Police, the FBI, CIA anyone who can grab them by the ear and take them in for questioning. Sorry, but that headline is just...well I'm lost for words. Well actually I'm not but you get the point (I hope).

Here's the original Microsoft blog post quote:

Every new title published from Microsoft Studios will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store.

The blog post now though is a bit more diplomatic with its words and indicates a heightened sense of clarity on Play Anywhere. The new edited post now suggests Play Anywhere  is for the titles Microsoft specifically showcased at E3 2016. This leaves it open for interpretation that some future games won't be part of Play Anywhere (shock horror) that's if you want to read into it with your deer stalker hat, pipe and trench coat. More sensibly, perhaps Microsoft aren't talking beyond what was showcased at E3 and just focusing on all those games to avoid possible confusion about the games that will be part of Play Anywhere. Fair enough.

Here's the revised blog post quote:

Every new title published from Microsoft Studios that we showed onstage at E3 this year will support Xbox Play Anywhere and will be easily accessible in the Windows Store.

So you can read this as Microsoft keeping its options open or just being a bit more clear on what its goals were. Or like those reporting, this is a huge conspiracy and back-peddling that shows the poor and untrustworthy nature of evil Microsoft. Boo,hiss.

So bloody what?

Even if Microsoft has changed its stance it's hardly the end of the gaming world,  the death knell for Microsoft Game Studios and the Xbox brand or the collapsing of the Windows 10 ecosystem like a delicate pyramid of playing cards caught in some farting wind.  What is most probable and expected (if you've got an ounce of reasonable thought) is that with its Project Scorpio console releasing next year it's highly favourable to have some sort of exclusivity even if that's timed to help sell the bloody thing. You've got some people (and understandably so) simply suggesting why buy Xbox Scorpio when you can just get a PC seeing as there's no exclusives. A good point and reason enough for Microsoft to be more clear about what games will be shared across its platforms.

Edit: I would wager Halo 6 being a Scorpio first timed exclusive as a possibility.

The bottom line is, some people just like to jump the gun without all the facts and unlike mainstream journalists outside of tabloids  who might angle for a direct quote from someone important at Microsoft who can shed some authoritative light on the matter before talking rubbish. Instead it's prudent to just roll with some inane nonsense like it actually matters or makes a difference to gamers. Microsoft got caught, Microsoft changed its stance, Microsoft is bad.  Yeh right.

  • The funny thing about the phrase "stealth editing posts" is that there is no other way to edit a post other than with a few button clicks that do not openly broadcast that an edit is taking place. After an Edit is done then sure, there is usually a "last edited" flag, but who cares if people decide to take the Internet trolls in to account after releasing a post? This guy is hitting refresh 5,000 times a day and then posting about the Where's Waldo -style mismatches he finds. Pretty sad.

    ps, I edited this post
  • lmao, this professional internet arguer (or should I say 'master debater'?) obsession with semantics and holding everyone to their literal word is so out of control, you can't even edit a statement for clarification without being accused of malicious action?

Man, if all of my posts were set in stone on their first spelling / phrasing / tone, I would be in serious trouble.
