How Do You Come Up With Unique Names for Characters or Usernames?

This might be a bit off topic, but I’m curious how others approach naming things.

Whether it’s:

a VR avatar
a gaming character
a username
or even a fictional character for a story

Coming up with a unique name can be surprisingly difficult. Sometimes names feel too generic, and other times they don’t match the personality or vibe you’re going for.

I usually think about:

  • the theme or world the character belongs to
    whether the name should sound strong, mysterious, or simple
    and how memorable it feels after hearing it once

I’m curious:

  • Do you have a process for creating names?
    Do you reuse names across platforms or keep them unique?
    What makes a name “feel right” to you?

Would love to hear how others think about this.

    Creativity and humor. And sometimes asking a child.

    In the game Real VR Fishing, there is a location in Australia called Melly's Corner. There was also a player at the top of the competition leaderboard using the same name. I was in second place and my young daughter suggested I troll the leader by using the name "Smelly Corner". I thought it was genius, so I did 🤣.

      My username is simply my name plus first letter of surname ..... all letters mixed up.
