ive wanted an oculus since i first saw one on kickstarter years ago.. i bought the note 4 and gear vr "which wasn't easy in canada at the time"and I've been impatiently waiting for the rift to release. but when i found out the price was $600 American and i need a pc that costs over $1000 for a combined price of over $2000 cdn after taxes shipping and international fees, i lost all faith in oculus. i hate that i feel this way about a product ive been promoting to anyone who'd listen, but the bottom line is it is way to expensive for a product that will be obsolete in a year! if you don't agree then look at the note 4, even if it is considered a developer kit it still reflects exactly what will happen to all vr headsets, they are in their infancy, they are all so far from perfected and because of that every few months a new breakthrough will be made and the technology behind it will look like an a track in comparison.. if by some miracle anyone at oculus sees this post; you NEED to lower the price or find a way to operate it on a lesser computer because if im saying i wont be buying one then someone who hasn't been obsessed with the technology definitely wont.. and to be clear, your initial sales might do well but The moment it becomes outdated and everything they payed a mint for becomes useless, you will lose their trust and they wont come back.if you knew it would be twice as much as the $350 the gen-pop was led to believe, you should have cleared that up years ago because when its a few months before the ball drops and you find out the party is only for the rich, you would feel betrayed as well..

Sounds to me you should just wait for PS VR or 2nd gen which MAY be cheaper.

Op, seriously? I think this company is doing it as right as they can, by not rushing it, and not 'decreasing the performance'. That is simply a symptom of the technology having advanced ahead of an economically affordable computer's current capabilities. It's easy to forget just how far computers have come,in just 15 years I can't wait to see where things are at in another 15.Yet another poster saying only obsessive VR fans will buy this.. I'm not obsessed with VR, and I'm not rich, just got it on the chance I might enjoy it. Is splurging on a $600 toy really that crazy an idea to everyone thinking this? It might be the 30 years talking, but that's nothing. $600 is what you spend on a good weekend with friends once in a while.

if it were just $600 then maybe i would change my tune, but i live in canada and after currency exchange and our 13% tax $600 us becomes $957.78 cdn and that's only if you own a gaming pc which i dont.. the headset alone is my mouths rent. a bottom of the recommended spec pc is around $1200 +tax. and to be honest if im investing that much money i cant afford to pay for an upgrade in a few months.. if that was a one time investment that would keep me in the vr world for at least 2 years i could justify the sacrifice. but its obviously not going to become a standard and that is why im left out.. i cant afford a future proof pc with an i7 and nvidia titan the same as i cant afford to spend $1200 every year.. now im left feeling i should wait for the stand alone hololens or the note 6 or something further down the road that hints at being a stable platform... my complaint is simple, we were led to believe the headset would be around $350 and it doubled in price. if you can afford it then im truly happy for you but speaking for the majority of the population, if i have to chose between 2 months rent and vr its a no brainer. and now if ps4 puts out their headset at a reasonable price ill be among the millions that own one and developers will eventually notice that the market share for oculus is a fraction of the consoles share and the oculus community will suffer.. . if oculus wants a device for the fortunate few then they succeed. but if they want to become the leading distributor or vr products they need to rethink their strategy and come up with a more realistic platform

Yes that's true.

But hyper realistic next gen graphics aren't needed for immersion, just liquid smooth frame rates.

A fairly cheap 2015 GPU could pump out 90Hz stereo on some of the great games from early 2000.

It would be a great cash cow for owners of said game rights, just convert to VR and drop it into steam or oculus (if they have the toolchains still).

Sorry that's probably a new topic altoghter. WIth regard to CV1 pricing: It's not TOO bad in USA but here in EUR it's a bit to steep for me. Although if I were rich I would buy 3 or so :D being rich would solve the general problem of not being able to afford something.

So what spec P.C. do you have ATM?

Is it even close or are you just a dreamer?

1080 x 1200 screens x 2, running at a constant 90 FPS along with head tracking, and you want it to run on a lesser P.C. Go have a word with yourself.

its not that i cant physically afford the oculus rift along with the required pc, to be honest ive recently come into enough money to do so..
the problem is justification of the price. knowing what John carmack has done with the gear vr shows me that with the right motivation, impressive virtual reality can be achieved on some relatively underpowered equipment. comparing the gear vr's performance with the rift's are obviously on 2 different ends of the spectrum as far as capabilities go, but if making the rift open to a larger audience was really a goal i have no doubt it could've been made to run on pc's with less expensive components.. but because its now owned by Facebook, and Facebook is no stranger to money and lucrative partnerships, i think the cost and minimum specs was no accident.. and because of that the goal of making a vr headset that "everyone" can afford got lost along the way...

my confliction about buying one is not solely because if i do ill be eating kraft dinner for the next 6 months, but because if we all do we set a standard that gives them a license to take as much as they want.. if they didn't pretend to be more about the community then the money then i would've seen this coming. but they did and i didn't so im gonna piss and moan just a little bit longer before i break down and buy one anyway.

no pc.. just note 4, ps4 and smart tv.. the plan was to hold off buying a pc till close to launch so as to get a better deal.. but its looking like it'll have to wait a little longer

on second thought.. im probably just gonna get the Playstation vr then half a year later grab a note 6 with gvr. by that time ill be buying a new phone anyway so it won't feel unjustified..
and wait till hololens fixes its fov and comes down in price... to be honest if hololens gets it right they're gonna kill it.. anywhere i go i can have vr on my face.. sounds like a good future..

I have a feeling that a Rift will drop in price long before Hololens will.
