Or go with a micro four thirds based system. They are mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses that are smaller than a dslr, but come close to the quality. I recently got a Panasonic Lumix GX7 as an every day carry camera, it's video features beat my Canon 5D Mark III (the lumix has 60fps 1080p video, focus peeking and autofocus during video. The 5D lacks all those).
Both Olympus and Panasonic Lumix micro four thirds cameras can use each others lenses.
There's cheap micro four thirds like the Olympus E-PM2 (16MP) with 14-42mm lens and 40-150mm lens for only $399 at Adorama, or a Panasonic Lumix GF2 (12.1MP) with 14-42mm lens for $299 (also Adorama).
Although I don't know what the cheaper ones are like for video. My Lumix GX7 was around $1200, so I'd expect it's features to be a bit better than a $299 version. :)
The lower models tend to list 1080i for video, although I think in the case of the GF2 that's only for 60fps, the 30fps mode may be 1080p. I'm not sure though.
Be warned, if you get an interchangeable lens camera like a dslr or micro four thirds, you will probably get GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome). It won't be long before you are starting to think up excuses to buy things like a thousand dollar super fisheye lens. :)
