ok ok time to pitch an actual game idea: Maiden Voyage
Hey Forum,
Now that I have done some research and seen what VR is capable of and where the medium is going.... I really *really* want to make a VR game now. And the initial idea that I am brainstorming is titled "Maiden Voyage" or just "Titanic"
Imagine if you will, being let loose to explore the titanic minutes before it hits the iceberg on its maiden voyage....
Elements of Gameplay:
Exploration: just building and exploring the titanic alone in VR would be an amazing experience in and of itself.
Interactivity: imagine all of the interactive elements you could design into this
Job/Social Sim: optional (will explain in further detail below)
Survival: the core goal (will explain further)
The top two elements are pretty self explanatory....
Job/Social Sim:
you will be interacting with the virtual experience from the perspective of a character . each character will have a whole plethora of unique exclusive scenarios.
you will board the titanic in a stationary like fashion (think asunder earthbond) that will introduce you to the titanic from an on rails perspective and perhaps shift you through a few scenes to give you an idea of the person you are playing as and what your role is on the ship. then you are unleashed upon the titanic minutes before it hits the iceberg (there is nothing you can do to stop it).
when you start the game you are free to move around and interact with the environment (think technolust).
best way to explain it is to imagine taking control of a character along side an NPC that nags you to do stuff
the player is free and encouraged to follow these sequences as far as they can be taken until the ship begins its sinking phase. or simply abandon the sequences and randomly wander around the ship.
there will be many extracurricular activities to get involved with by simply wandering around the ship
character scenarios represents different play through styles;
-one character might come with a set of exclusive scenarios that feels a lot like a dating sim
-another one might be a worker from the boiler room
and last but certainly not least you a free to just ditch these activities completely. depending on where you are and which character you have chosen some NPCS might not even notice you are gone, others will just start yelling at you and another one might chase you and force you to stay until you hit the the sinking phase.
when you do escape you become a "wandering stowaway" free to get involved in all manner of generic random activities happening all around the ship
Survival:
this is the most important aspect of the game. once the sinking phase begins it will become a pretty intense survival experience depending on where you are in the ship once the phase begins. other places you will be immediately screwed and die depending on how the sinking phase goes. others you will be realitively safe until the hull begins to submerge and snap
dialing in the sinking phase will be very important.
in some situations depending on where you are located at when the ship begins its sinking phase you will find yourself trapped in a room and have to try to escape with puzzle solving skills
the main goal when the ship begins sinking phase is to reach the deck and get on a life boat
of course you will have sequences of NPCs also doing the same thing as you and you are free to help and tag along with them or go your own way and leave them stranded
and the final decision which will really pull you into the world will be weather you decide to get on a life boat or not
