Palmer said big news coming

Few guesses and speculations if the news will actually be Oculus VR own to announce;

- Position tracking kit that you can buy as an addon peripheral to the first Oculus Rift dev kit.
- New version of the dev kit with stereoscopic cameras to enable gesture control and augmented reality possibilities?
- New version of the dev kit with a higher resolution screen w. 2560×1600 or 2048x1536 or 1920x1080 pixel resolution?
- ETA date announcement of when the final retail version of Oculus Rift will become available for 2013 holiday season?

Few other guesses if the news will actually be Oculus Rift support by a third-party:

- AAA / Triple-A game / games announced at E3 with Oculus Rift support, like for example Half-Life 3 by Valve?
- Microsoft will announce Oculus Rift compatibility with Xbox One, or that they will license the tech from Oculus VR?
- Sony will announce Oculus Rift compatibility with PlayStation 4, or that they will license the tech from Oculus VR?

Or perhaps the "even better news" is that

Apparently, Justin Krenz also commented on that thread and he wrote that it wasn't an Oculus Rift, it was a DIY HMD built by Valve. The original poster says it was a modified rift and it used an optical tracking system.

Any of the mentioned improvements would be greatly welcomed. Although we have no clue what the the announcement could be it seems very early to define any feature of a final version to be found in the consumer version of the Rift.

I think that the announcement might have nothing to do with rift. Palmer is going to "pop the question" to his girlfriend and since he loves us all so much he is letting us in on it before he tells her. Sorry to ruin the surprise Palmer! If you are taking the plunge then make sure to get a pre-nup. I know love is forever but giving up half your earnings is just crazy - you will thank me later. Haha :lol:

Seriously though, I expect it to just be an announcement of some partnership maybe and not related to hardware at all.

I have a vague feeling someone in this thread may have typed Half Life 3 @ E3 with a trailer for Rift integration?

Please don't do that again, it is very dangerous, my heart can't take it.

Yeah maybe they will come out with a new Half Life 3 and call it Half Life One just like Xbox did ROFl

Or maybe Oculus wants to really confuse us and introduce a dev kit 2 but call it Oculus Rift One. :roll:

Ok guys I had a few days to think this over and I am almost 100 percent sure what one of the major announcements for E3 will be.

After watching this video of Nate Mitchell at the EVE fanfest event -

And with the recent hiring of ex-Valve developer Tom Forsyth and robotics and sensor fusion researcher Steve LaValle it becomes quite clear that Oculus is ready to announce development for some sort of peripheral to accommodate better human/machine interaction in a VR environment.

It would also be an additional profit center for Oculus that possibly could provide a better production cost/profit margin return on investment per unit then the Rift actually does!

This seems like perfect timing for revealing such a piece of information. It doesn't place any prematurely finalized hardware requirements on the Rift itself plus it also would give both developers and consumers an exciting possibility of having a standardized input device which functions more suitably in Virtual Reality than a traditional mouse or game pad does.

It is the next logical step in the progression of the "Oculus Rift Story" to provide the media with a newsworthy topic to keep the Oculus media train gaining steam.

So The Grand Poobah has spoken and it is now official what the future of E3 this year will hold in store for us. Next year will be announcement of the consumer version. Damn I'm good. So sleep easy Rifters - mystery solved! :o

Sounds plausible. I think you just may have hit the predilection jackpot. Less than a week before we know now.

I am curious if your prediction will be right. I would prefer your prediction to a second generation dev kit. They would really have to have a good peripheral if that was the case because it is not like the hydra does not work well.

I would happy with a customer version release date, although I am not sure we will see it, but you are right they need to do something to keep the spotlight on them with such large companies making announcements.
