PLEASE MAKE A VIRTUAL DESKTOP!!

I have to add, there is BIG MONEY in making a virtual desktop. Stock Brokers, business analysts, doctors, and professionals could give a sh*t about it's gaming capability. However if you can make it so that they can have 20 legal documents open across 5 subjects simultaneously, or track the 1 minute, 5 minute, and 2 hour candle charts for three different instruments simultaneously - THAT IS POWER. If you ever see the stock brokers they all keep a wall of screens in front of them, there is never enough screen real estate to present all the information that they are looking at.

People once they seen it works would pay A LOT of money to super-charge their work into a virtual desktop,

Then the next generation would be to make two hand trackers - sorta like Microsoft's Kinect that can track the position of a person's hands, - it would be stitched back into the virtual desktop allowing them to move desktops around just like in Iron man, or the virtual desktops in the Matrix.

I ride the bust 2 1/2 hours a day and if I could reclaim that time in a virtual desktop it would make a massive difference in my productive of my studies.

This is exactly what i've been planning to build in a near future.
The problem is that i have close to zero programming experience (except a rock, paper, scissors game in java then...), but i'm a fast learner so it shouldn'be a huge problem.

I've been wondering if i should go with the unity engine out of convenience or start from scratch (which will take a s**tload of time).

The pros and cons i've got so far is:

Easier interaction with the computer files
No limits in what the desktop will be capable of
Probably faster boot time of the program
Guaranteedly lower CPU usage

Will take quite some time to learn (probably not much longer than learning unity to it's full extent though)

What i'm wondering for a starter is if someone could recommend a low CPU-usage 3D engine. To start out a single layer desktop would be enough, only difference with the ordinary desktop is that this would be half a circle or more if you want. Would be really convenient together with a spinning chair and wireless mouse/keyboard on a small chair-mounted table since that would minimize the strain on the neck.

You're completely right on how much easier it would be to have access to all that information at once with various slides spread across and behind you. A few things do have cons though. Having to rotate their heads often to look at a section of information would get tiring and cause soreness in the neck or possible strained muscles. On top of that not everyone adapts very well to the VR view. Some of those people will most likely have motion sickness problems and not be able to function well.

Since their virtual sight would only spin around parallell to their physical body (no moving around, except possibly up and down if you'd like) i believe the motion sickness problems will be greatly reduced, especially with the increased resolution and decreased latency in the consumer version of the OR.
But you are right about having to turn the head much and often.
Even though i haven't tried it myself i believe that a 1920x1080 screen still will be to low resolution for these kind of applications to be fully effective.
3840x2160 should do the job (still with room for improvement though), but we probably have to wait a while for that to get on the consumer market.

A basic search of this forum will show several Virtual Desktop projects deep in development including demos.

I don't want to see only multiple floating windows of spreadsheets. I a want to see:

1. A 3D "Programming Language". There must be a way to create functional visual representations of the most basic programming gates, so that they can be used to create computer programs using a visual code instead of a written code. It will take object orientation to a whole new level.
Data visualization in interactive stereoscopic 3D.

2. Intuitive 3D representation of the organization of the file system of the machine. It will be the ultimate file browser.

3. Context aware voice commands.

How would the mouse be used?

When you use virtual desktops today, the mouse pointer "jumps" to the desktop you switch to. But with OR you would want a seamless transition.
