How are you going to provide individual colours to each subpixel without just turning the backlight into a full colour screen with 3 times the resolution? (at which point you already have a triple res colour screen and the brightness layer is unneeded).

the lcd subpixels that would normally control the color would not have the RGB color filters in front of them. They would simply control whether the backlight comes through. pixel[RGB] -> p1 p2 p3. All the pixels would block all of the blacklight except for 1 at a time. You would step through the pixels adjusting the backlight color in sync with the current pixel allowing light through.

Do you mean the back color matrix is a static matrix of R,G,B and then you have a triple res monochrome brightness matrix on top. If that's the case then I'm confused as to why you showed a yellow pixel on the backlight in your drawing?

Normally an lcd backlight is just white, and provides the light to be filtered by the lcd pixels(each pixel composed of a red, a green, and a blue filtered subpixel). The bac klight is whatever colored light source fits the requirements; It is a singular light source, and not matrixed. It could be an array of "sources" to better regulate local lighting.

My backlight is a light source providing the color of each pixel. Instead of each normal red, green, and blue subpixel forming a single colored pixel on the screen, my screen subpixels control whether you can see the backlight.

So whereas on a normal screen you would have a single pixel(composed of three subpixels), on my screen you have 3 individual pixels in the same space colored by the backlight.

If that pixel is the current pixel to be lit, the backlight changes to the correct color, and the pixel(normally a subpixel, but with color filter removed) becomes transparent.

But would that mean the backlight would have to be a matrix that could do any colour. So to get any colour from the backlight, you would have to have 3 light sources for every sub pixel you have. Unless you have a different idea of how the backlight can change colour

All the pixels on the screen are exposed to the one backlight(colored light source). It can be light piped in over fiber optics, leds, whatever can change colors fast enough as each pixel exposes the light source to the viewer at the appropriate time.

I guess i'm trying to say that you move the RGB light filtering to the light source rather than each individual pixel. For example, you can used led side lighting with a set of 3 white led's. One with a red filter, one with a green filter, and one with a blue filter. Vary the brightness of the led's for each pixel, and use the lcd panel pixel(subpixels on a normal screen) as a light blocker/exposer.

It's a interesting idea, I'm sure it would be possible to have a electronic colour/brightness filter on the pixel itself. There would still be a lot of unknown issues, the colour gamut for one. I doubt you could use any current technology and OLED is too far ahead but I enjoy the concept of it :)
