Seems commercial unit assiduously avoided

It seems the only topic that I can't find any information about on these forums is the imminentness and possibility for a commercially available unit for consumers.

Is there any intent to provide a consumer unit? Is this just endless development for the sake of development? I see endless discussion of development kits but not a word about what a consumer available unit would even look like.

It is very cool stuff but if you don't intend to sell it to the public this is a colossal waste of time and energy not to mention the 2 Bils that somebody at Google paid to buy this.

I'm not a game developer or a computer nerd. I'm a consumer who's interested in buying the final product. However there does not seem to be a final product in the offing.

  • Yes, there will be a final product as some point in the future, and (if you are not a developer) you should wait.

Beyond that, I can't really say anything.
  • So what? Is it a secret? How long is the wait going to be? A year? two years? Five years? By that time people won't even be using computers any more.
  • At least he asked before he bought a dev kit. Oh.. and google didn't spend 2b on VR; not sure where you got that info from.

IMO, it's too bad Google didn't buy Oculus, they are much, much larger than FB. I bet Android device integration with Samsung, Google & OculusVR would have made a simply amazing product. Not taking anything away from the FB buyout, but I think Google would have been a better fit. Who knows, maybe Google will buy FB. Then they'll own 3 out of the 4 largest websites on the internet, ok maybe that isn't a good idea.
  • Oh sorry it was FaceBook. Thing is though there is no mention anywhere of even a projected timeline.
  • You are correct.

When Microsoft / Sony gives their developer platforms to developer's / studios (usually 2-3 years before they're announced publicly), do they give out a time frame of the new console? No.

Now, if you had watched any of the videos since they've started, the time frame of release is 2015.. 2016 if something has gone drastically wrong. Of course, subject to change, as I am not privy to FB/OVR's corporate secrets.
  • Until you have a commercially available product all the hype in the world regarding
"how virtual reality became a reality" is just so much hot air. I don't see any indication on this website that OR even intends to put out a commercial product.

If I go to the front page of Oculusvr.com there immediately is a commercial product there (GearVR). If I go to the "products" page the first sentence there is this:

DK2 is the latest development kit for the Oculus Rift that allows developers to build
amazing games and experiences for the consumer Oculus Rift.

People at Oculus also constantly talk about the consumer version in interviews. How are you missing all of this?
