Shadow Box (Technolust world idea)

you are challenged by an anonymous hacker to enter a "shadow box" as an initiation rite.

backstory;

during the early days of direct neural interfacing (DNI) there was a resounding excitement and enthusiasm that this technology was a huge step towards a bright future of limitless possibilities. reports detailing successful levels of DNI circled the globe. many felt that DNI was "the greatest achievement of humanity since the invention of the internet and computing itself." imagine being able to consciously control computers. direct brain to computer networking.

a few years later a small team of crazy game developers discovered a way to hack the DNI network to allow a DNI user to project their consciousness into virtual worlds, which later came to be know as "jacking in"

DNI become so ubiquitous that eventually a decision was made to make DNI enhancement mandatory.

this decision caused a huge wave of controversy though. in the wake of this controversy a small group of anonymous hackers, conspiracy theorist and sympathizers began to organize protest and coordinate strategic sabotage against DNI and any supplemental infrastructures and systems that support DNI. this organization was labeled "DNI terrorists". their mantra was "DNI should always be optional, and society should accommodate both DNI and non DNI individuals."

one of the tools they created for their sabotage was known as a "shadow box"

a "shadow box" was a device (typically hidden within a box or some other object) that when viewed alone without anyone else present would allow the device the opportunity to hijack a users consciousness into a virtual world without warning and without user confirmation. essentially a shadow box is a nefarious consciousness trap. a DNI equivalent of a computer virus. intended to force the user into a hellish nightmare that is inescapable. fear overwhelmed the population. many shadow boxes were so intense that they inadvertently killed their targets. these shadow boxes became know as "shadow deathbox"

fear from shadow deathbox ended swiftly when a global effort was made to implement ongoing security measures designed specifically to prevent forced hijacking of a users consciousness. ending the terror of the shadow deathbox

many have tried to create a shadow deathbox. none have succeeded. after the implementation of DNI security system a successful shadow deathbox has not been deployed to an unsuspecting target in over 10 years.

shadow deathbox remains as a hacker legend pipe-dream. surely the hacker who create or discovers the next shadow deathbox will become a legend.

shadow box creation, possession and intent to distribute is highly illegal.

shadow box is commonly traded and used as if it was a recreational drug on a daily basis by underground counter-culture hacker communities :P

  • what is shadow box?

    essentially it is a dark eerie and creepy puzzle platforming game that has horror/survival elements to it. your goal is to make it to a virtual jack in terminal to escape to the next level. the catch is there is feedback. each time you jack into a virtual terminal within a virtual world the feedback makes things get incredibly trippy & glitchy. the laws of physics go out the window. similar to the idea of "dreams within a dream" from the movie inception

    early shadow boxes were merely endless free fall experiences. where the target was unable to do anything and be constantly tortured by a bot AI program hacking into the targets memories and mentally attacking the target as they fall.

    others were created to be a more hands on approach. where the perpetrator/creator of the shadow box would be like that of a "game master". many of these shadow deathboxes were considered exceptional cruel as they would give the target a false sense of hope. most perpetrators preferred this type of shadow box over the free fall ones. as they were able to weaken the target to divulge information or otherwise get the target to do anything they wanted, even going so far as to offer freedom from the shadow deathbox in return for credits. unfortunately most perpetrators would rarely if ever make good on their promises....
  • speaking of inception another premise for "worlds within worlds" could be to "jack in" to someones dream....
