SUDDENLY

I just decided to check whether or not my smartphone's display was AMOLED rather than LCD (because I tilted it around and figured that it has infinite viewing angle, and this particular phone has two revisions, one with LCD and one with AMOLED screens) by viewing it with the Rift cup, I picked a packaged cup off the Rift's boxcase, couldn't confirm or deny anything because the screen had RGB pattern (could've been direct hit if it had pentile pattern), applying big pressure to the screen didn't had any effect either, but probably because the matrix didn't received any of it, so I'll just keep thinking it's an LCD model because it doesn't have true blacks. Then I (just for the fun of it) checked my desktop monitor with the cup, it had ridiculous SDE although you can't ever spot it under normal circuimstances LOL.

Then I was going to put the lens back where it belongs and suddenly...

...really? THAT was an A cup? The smallest cups are in the boxcase, what are the mounted cups, B cups?.. I was Rifting with B cups all along?! Oh my fucking god, I can have even bigger FOV, like about 20% bigger? Holy shit! Installing A cups right now!

  • Okay I've installed A cups (also blew the dust away, was blowing using my mouth through the hollow pen casing, didn't get any spit in it), and it indeed increased my FOV a lot. Recalibration for IPD also displayed that my IPD is 60.8 mm, I seriously doubt if it's correct, but as long as it works right it doesn't matter.

With these A cups I can now drive my eyeballs all the way to the edge until it starting to hurt, and at that point it's only slightly beyond lens edge, as opposed of seriously beyoned that I had with B cups. The horseblinders effect is also reduced dramatically, with B cups it was moderate feel of watching through binoculars, but now it really IS like a ski mask. Now I can also notice that far away edges are blurried quite a bit, I think one to two pixels in diameter, but since it's in peripheral, it doesn't hurt much.

What can I say? Rift is awesome, and use biggest cups whenever it's possible. If you wear glasses - wear contacts.
  • Mine had the A cups installed on the rift so I didn't need to change them.

Whoa, that must have been a really nice surprise!

I handle my Rift a LOT (pick it up, put it down, repeat), and eventually the lenses get further away from my eyes as the Rift seems to slowly pull apart over time (the thing that gets adjusted via the slotted dials on both sides). Only recently did I realize this happened, so I had a similar moment of glee when I realized I could have more FOV after dialing the lens back in to be closer to my eyes. :)

I think the A cups are supposed to be installed by default, so maybe raidho's got the wrong ones put in by the factory. Probably why he never thought to check!
  • I bought my Rift on eBay, but I didn't thought anyone would swap default cups to B or C cups just to try it one time.
  • i didn't really realise the cups changed the FOV that much. i'm just using the default ones, i thought it was more if you wear glasses or have vision problems.
