I know we all like free stuff but it seems fair to charge for something that you put so much time into especially when it offers so much value.

When Vorpx goes up for sale I'll be in line with cash in hand and a smile on my face!

unfortunatly 95% of the time sharing information such as the source code to vorpx does not pay bills.

I am very much a supporter of open source, but when a hobby becomes a job, thats when I think any sane person should switch open source to paid product.

One, you do cause it interests you as a hobby, and you treat it as such. No Strict QA, Support, or active obligated updates (Vireio for example). The other becomes the dependant system for sustaining food, and shelter for yourself.

malfate, you nail, its more about the "system" of sustainment, being able to survive in this world. That is the larger perspective many people here are missing. If we could create a society, where you are not AFRAID of losing housing or food (or status or whatever), you would be so much more willing to contribute to free open source stuff. In fact it would be so OBVIOUS the advantages of all of us sharing freely back and forth with each other, I don't see how anyone would reject it. It is the system we live under now that is our enemy.

All I can say is this, very soon the kurzweil AI's will be here, and all of you will be totally worthless and obsoleted perhaps, and if you are still trying to remain competitive so that you can get food and housing in that system, you won't be, and you will possibly die and perish (as his happening to possibly 2 billion around the world now). Changes need to be made NOW or ASAP so that you and all the rest of us survive. When I was a young child, right after I finished reading my father's collection of the complete works of Edgar Allen Poe, he gave me his copy of "The Creature from Jeckyll Island"*** for my reading pleasure. It left a lasting impression. I am somewhat a fan of Graham Hancock and the Zeitgeist Movement, but I remain rooted in reality. I like to study all subject matter. You never know where you will find the next hidden gem that can be applied to an alternate field of study. So, I get a positive kick out of reading posts like those above. Informative and entertaining.

EDIT: ***Wrong book title mentioned above, but same subject matter. I do not remember the title of the similar book I read as a child. I did read the above-mention book when it was first published decades later as an adult, however.

VorpX is not just like the other perceiption drivers out there (no offence to the creator of that) which only has a few handful of games working for it and has a few issues with it, but it will support 80 games and has lots of options and two diffrent rendering modes. Honestly while a lot of you might say well 40 bucks is too much considering the amount of games working for it and what. i dont see a bad thing. also more so since right now theres really not a ton of actual game games that work with the Oculus Rift.....:-)

I wish the vorpx people perceived themselves as so wealthy and enriched, that like abrash, and franklin, they just wanted to give back that time they spent for free, just to enrich VR for all of us as the only payback, not happening under this system.

He was a swell guy, but then he started talking about chemtrails and I walked off because I just didn't believe his theories on that. Gundlach may be taking that title at some point. He has become very critical of our failed economic policies causing such high unemployment, alienating himself from many former friends at the treasury. He doesn't understand why the administration doesn't create more state funded jobs in areas like software development to take up the slack of humans that the private IT sector is no longer employing. That the government should be the employer of last resort. It is just becoming heart wrenching meeting so many brilliant people that want to do good in this world, and they just have no options under this system. You are at a crossroads Geekmaster, you want to be paid to work in the VR industry, so you can quit your other job, but that opportunity may not open up for you. So what will you choose? To still spend all your free time doing all you can to give to the community to enrich us all and yourself with better VR, or start trying to exist in the world of trademark, copyright, patents, profits and hopefully selling some software? Tough choice, it seems you have a family to support. All I can say is that I remember a young kid Palmer, and as you found in a lot of his old posts at MTBS3D, he was always about giving it away for free and he plugged along for MANY years, but then he had no family. I would suggest going to as many conferences/meetings/etc that you can, where you can talk personally with the companies themselves if you don't want to do your own thing. I have seen on several occassions where a company who was aware of someone from thier online presence, after meeting them in person gave them a job on the spot. Some VP at Electronic Arts was really generous in this regard. But you have seen the layoffs at valve and other places of truly brilliant people, this world is getting to be a hard place for a lot of humans, unnecessarily so.

Hmm... I just looked up the publication date of that book. Although I did read Griffin's book, I had to have been an adult when I read it based on when it was written. The book that I got from my father WAS as a child WAS about the origins of the Federal Reserve System and had much of the same content, but I read it in the early 60's. I should have looked up that information before posting instead of waiting until now. However, it did leave a lasting influence, which is probably why I own the newer title as part of my book collection.

My children are grown, my house and cars are paid for, my wife has her own job, and I telecommute from home, so I can afford to live on much less than I do now. I do not need to spend tens of thousands of dollars per year on books and tools and techno-toys, but they are an investment in my future. Although I can live and be happy on a lot less income, my wife wants to see my income rise significantly, and she wants a fancy house on a lake and high-status sports cars like her friends have been buying, so I need to take that into account too.

I do not know how to shift my career focus away from the ancient software systems that I now support and into this renaissance of VR. Some here have suggested a kickstarter, but recent concerns by Namielus over his pending kickstarter make that seem somewhat less viable as a realistic option.

Regarding government jobs being the last resort: what do all the recently layed-off (sequestered) government employees (including IT workers) do now for their "job of last resort"?

open source and free can be nice. but you know what i think. I think the guy(s) would not have been quite motivated to make it such a fine tuned product if he gave it free. it might have been more like the other driver only a handful of games and limited options. Maybe he'll come out with a "free lite" version down the road with limited options and support for only a few games. we'll see. If it works well with few issues then i dont see the problem at all :-). open source is great but like others says sometimes ya gotta make a living too!
