Got my
bag and
boots today 8-)
I might try to see if I can ship the bike to Manning and my hiking stuff to Campo. If I can do that, then I'll bike south on the Underground Railroad, west along the Southern Tier to the start point of the PCT. Ship the bike to Manning, and then I can go north-bound on the PCT, and take Route 3 towards the Sierra Cascades, head South, get on the Northern Tier, head west to the Pacific Coast trail, and south until I get to the TransAm. Bike across the US, and then go north along the Atlantic Coast trail, west on the Northern Tier, and south on the Underground Railroad. That will literally put me back where I started.
And.. I live literally within walking distance of a point on the Underground Railroad bike trail 8-)
I dunno, that route is just looking at the overview maps, so not entirely sure how the logistics would go. The interesting part about doing this as a combination trip is that, for the most part, the equipment is literally the same. The only differences being:
Bike: Bike repair kit, cycling shoes, the
bike (not mine.. my trucker is a bit more, suitable, for me), bike accessories
Hike: Backpack, hiking shoes, trekking poles, ice picks
Something I was seriously thinking about doing, although expensive, is taking the NOLS Rocky Mtn WFR class before this entire trip, and if the entire ordeal pans out, and is possible, then I might be doing a career change; get EMT-B certified, SARS training program, and then 3 months of volunteer work in the ER/EMT. In my.. previous life.. I was "elected" to do combat medic training, and I was good at it, so.. who knows. Being outdoors and doing rescue work would be a much more fulfilling career than listening to people bitch because their computer is down and they can't surf the 'net on their lunch break.
