Video card suggestions.

Alright, my gtx 670s are definitely showing their age and i want to upgrade. And with speculation of the CV1 not showing up till late 15, early 16 and the gtx980ti probably now showing up till 2016 i think i want to ditch my sli 670 setup for a single 980.
After a bunch of reading and checking benchmarks, a single 980 not only performs better, but i'll be reducing the power draw and heat on my system. This gives a better general performance by ditching my sli 670. Mind you i have the FTW 4gb version of these cards, so they are a tad better than the stock 670.
Here is my disquiet, the gtx 980 has been out for a while now (6 months to my knowledge) whats the likely hood of Nvidia releasing a new card in the foreseeable feature? My current cards are just not quite cutting it for my DK2, especially in games like Elite Dangerous, and with the release of GTA 5 next month i feel like my cards are now holding me back. Has anyone heard anything about anything new Nvidia is cooking up?
If not, im looking at this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487089. I usually get cards with promotions for games and stuff, anyone know of any going on?

  • I think the 980 is a pretty safe bet right now.

Even if something new comes, top-end cards usually hold value pretty well on the used market.
  • Very true.
I also found this http://www.evga.com/support/stepup/ i had heard about this, but didn't know how it worked. So, that'll cover me for a little bit, just in case. My current cards run Blender and Unity with my dinky little projects fine now, i just kind of wanted to future proofish a bit ya know? With the 980ti being pushed off till next year, i decided i should hop in now rather than wait.
So ya, i guess i'll pick up the 980 a week before GTA 5 is released then. Maximize that setp up time as much as i can. Thanks Cyber!

Im using the Gigabyte superclocked GTX980 Windforce and its a monster. Highly suggest a 980!
  • It looks to me like you either buy a 980 and hope it powers the CV1 or you buy a cheaper 970 now with the possibility that you might get another 970 in the next 12 months.
  • Well, with AMD putting out their 8gb 290 im really hoping Nvidia will respond with a 980 8gb. I don't care much for the 970, i am developer and big into modding and need full use off all 4gb. Which is why i got these 670 4gb cards in the first place. They are a bit over 2 years old now though, so hopefully Nvidia will respond soon with a 980 8gb or something new all together. And if the 980 isn't up to snuff for cv1, well... that probably wont be till the end of the year anyways, and these top tier cards resell pretty well. All the Crescent Bay demos are being done with the 980, so i feel that's a pretty safe bet.
