Virtual Reality and Dreams Research!
Our video game laboratory at MacEwan University in Alberta, Canada has been examining the effects of video game play on night time dreams for a decade. We have found that there are various well-being outcomes evidenced in the dreams of gamers.
We are doing this because of the important for dreaming. Research has shown that dreaming is important for things such as memory consolidation, emotional regulation, fear-extinction and coping, and acting as a simulation for various threats and traumas dating back to when we were much more wild! The sense of presence that video games invoke in us is dream-like and often affects the dreams we have, and the fact that VR allows for even more presence in video games than before makes us curious about the potential effects and uses this technology could present for the benefit of mankind aside from just entertainment (which is certainly awesome too, make no mistake =P).
We are postings to this forum hoping to find people who are working with the Rift who are willing to tell us about their experiences and their related dreams. We think that the enhanced presence experienced in VR, available through using the Rift, will further enhance the types of dreams we have been finding in non-VR type gaming. If you are interested in participating and have some sort of experience with the Rift please PM me for more information (and the survey link)!
Feel free to go at your own pace as the most important part is recalling a recent dream. The first part of the survey is demographic stuff, though be assured that your responses will remain absolutely anonymous, so don't worry about weird dreams are anything (gamers tend to have more bizarre dreams according to our research!). If you can't recall a dream, don't worry as there is no time limit on the survey. Simply leave it until you have something to report. Don't worry if you don't have perfect recall, anything you can give us is valuable for our research into understanding this new technology and how it affects our dreams and the potential benefits of it!
If you have any questions please feel free to message me!
