Where Arcades Would Have Been..

Arcades have died out, most of us probably remember the day's in which we went to battle out Tekken or Street Fighter at the local arcade, or just race it up on some kind of more expensive arcade unit.


Could you imagine the type of tech we have now, with perhaps a little ingenuity and backwards engineering of current technology; and how that would affect arcades if they did exist today?


Perhaps Massive FOV arcade boxes..

Maybe far better Hologram games..

smell a vision...

I think Arcades were cut short, yeah sure there are Boomers and Dave and Buster's, but they have very limited Titles which only make for 1 or 2 decent experiences, perhaps because of the demand of Arcade units. It's a little sad.

Any Thoughts? Should have Arcades thrived to see these days, or was it better to whither away and die due to online competition?.

    I never liked arcades

    too expensive, not necessarily a good selection

    I like barcades (gaming + alcohol) these days, but the most enjoyable ones have consoles set up with couches, not just arcade cabinets

    Afaik Arcades are still a big thing in Japan, with some really sweet machines...
    Based on that, I believe we ll be seeing great VR arcades with hardcore haptic feedback and what not in a not so distant future...
    I mean, we had haptic feedback in arcades for years now, and it was just the ¨bonus¨ to the experience...

    You noted some good points, many people found them pretty expensive back in the late 90s when they started bring VR aspects to the Arcades. I remember Virtual World" you would spend like 15$ for like a 10min long VR experience, which was horrible.

    Accessories like like guns, and wheels were pretty durable. I don't see many advances in this area, since Arcades dropped out.

    I just feel a lot of improvements could have been done, much like home theater. :(

    @Frito : I had no idea Japan still kept this mainstream over there, that's pretty cool. I kinda felt like the disappearance of Arcades was a world-wide occurrence, ill have to check it out. Thanks!

    Any other countries that anyone knows still have "traditional" arcades, as well more modern units :?:

    We will probably see some VR arcades at the early stages of VR (2010s and 2020s), but the problem relies in the content. Creating content for arcades is much less rewarding than creating content for consoles/PC. The arcades will need to have an online charging system (like namco is now doing) so that the developers get paid a percentage (30-40%) per use, then it will certainly take off!

    VR arcades should use well-ventilated booths that lock from the inside (or from outside with a manager key) to protect distracted players from pickpockets. And the manager must be able to suspend the game when the player's date gets verbally upset at how long he has been ignoring her.

    :lol: I had not considered that. I had considered a good heating/cooling system that could react to game environments. Battlefield 3 in the snow with AC on max! What a blast. We have elaborate systems here for growing marijuana that control temps and humidity. These can mimic almost any area of the earth.
