Who remembers Magic Eye?

Was just wondering who remembers "magic eye" and was thinking would a similar concept apply to VR, I remember I used to be able to get into the images really quickly when I was younger, literally within seconds for most of them.

Other people who tried could never seem to do it and if they did it would take them much longer!

It got me thinking with everyone seeming to have a different perspective/experience to "presence" weather or not a similar situation is causing the problem?

I think with VR at the stage it's at you do have to be able to let yourself go a bit, as in meaning go with it try and accept the position the experience is putting you in rather than try and fight it or be stubborn and not wanting to believe! Or just expect it to happen.

In an ideal world we would all put the Rift on and instantly be transported to another dimension and without having to even think just automatically believe we are there but with a lot of people this doesn't seem to be the case.

Listening to people go on about kite and lightnings new demo "the station" I've noticed a few people saying the bill boards don't look right? For me they actually look perfect, even the clearest and best 3D images I've seen in VR.

So do you lot think there could even be a sort of art to perceiving "presence" ?

  • i experienced well with watching an android rollercoaster without lenses as i would a 3d stereogram without lenses as a way to help introduce the potential of these hmd
  • Cross-eye seems to be easier, but I was eventually able to do parallel images as well.

I always hear this, but I can only seem to do parallel pairs. Even those are difficult for me.

And I, for one, think it would be hilarious to have 2D Magic Eye textures inside VR!

It would certainly be ironic

Well Geekmaster taught me how to make them work (without being inverted) on this very forum...

Geekmaster gave lots of useful tips via MTBS forum on how to use your magic-eye / cross-eye skills in real life. My favourite one was instant-solving of all the 'spot the difference' riddles... I used to suck at those, now I can solve them in 3 seconds lol
