Willing to let me borrow your Oculus?

You have been following the progress of VR since the mid-80's and now, a month before DK2 arives, you want to build a graphic engine using a DK1? I think thats really bad timing and sounds like a lack of dedication to you own project.

Go buy the DK2 now. Work on your project, and in a years time, set up a kickstarter campaign.
If your project is good, im sure you can make your goal of $350 !

ps.
If you cant afford a $350 HMD, how could you ever afford a $800+ PC to run the CV1?

Yes, I have been following VR for a very long, and have seen
its' ups and downs.

I have not just started the graphic engine, it has been
an ongoing project as my schedule allows. I simply
stated that i'm adapting it to the Oculus only.

As far as affording the headset, sometimes peoples
situations change. Just because I may not be in a
position right now to buy it, does not mean that I
am not still interested in working with it.

I read that all wrong, I thought you culd afford it now, but wanted to wait for the CV1

Being from a country where the lowest welfare is $1800 a month (if you dont want to work) and free health care, that was me being a complete tool and condescending and Im truly sorry!

With DK2 on the way, I hope someone in the US wont be needing their DK1 and send it to you.

I agree that those who can't work should be helped; whether that comes from the community or government is another
debate.

But on the flip side, those who CHOOSE not to work, should not expect to mooch off of those that do.

I am making progress on the graphic engine, but it is going slow since I had to teach myself programming, the math
involved, and only have about 2 hours a day to work on it. I am not requesting any assistance on it though, so when
finished I can say "even though it was difficult, frustrating, and sometimes had those 'duh' moments. I accomplished
something that was important to me". Making money off it was never a goal, and never will be. If I can contribute
something useful to the VR community, all the better.

Hi just two words,

I think the problem here is that to actually finish the engine and test it all you will need an Oculus for a considerable amount of time given the little time you can dedicate a day to all this.

Took me a good couple of weeks working 12 hours a day or so and starting from bit & pieces I already had/knew quite well to make an OR engine from scratch so you are talking you are going to need an Oculus for months to get to the point of things.

My suggestion would be "the classic" as "simulate what you don't have" I mean you CAN literally make all your own engine the way you want/like it and make it even display exactly how the oculus needs, ok you say I don't have the oculus I can't move/see around but well "you still can do/have your engine".

I too done/tested all my stuff "first" and then when I knew 'ok this should be working as I want' then I added the Oculus in and in essence "that's been the simplest part".

Now I haven't tried this - YET - but I think one could probably make a "poor man 3D simulation thing" by rendering "oculus style" two half images and just look at them and/or build some "screen splitter" with carboard or such and look into.

The bottom line is there's LOT you can do "meanwhile" without the OR and "get ready" for the OR and/or whatever may come next.

If you are still at an engine stage you are making progresses sounds to me there's still lot you can do even if you don't have an OR.

However I think that probably the Ebay suggestion is one of the best, keep a good eye there ARE going to be a number of people "ready to throw on it their SDK1" to get the SDK2 or dunno what else, I suspect you may find it 50% down.

At what stage is your engine and what is intended for ?

Besides, don't ask me about Oculus .. I am not in US .. I am in Europe .. bit too far and too messy to ship things :mrgreen:

( actually it would probably cost me 30 Eur to send an OR from Europe to US .. and over $100 + taxes for me when it gets there back for you to send it from US to Europe ) .. not really practical :roll:

Work on the GE isn't being held by me not
having a rift. I've been working on it before
the rift was discussed on MTBS3D. It's
just now that VR is closer to a reality for
me (lower than $10,000 - $30,000); i've
decided to concentrate on making it
rift-friendly rather than try to support
a bunch of greatly varying devices.

Believe me, I know the work involved and the
time it demands. It is something I enjoy doing
though, and if the community looks down
on me for asking a favor then I will do what
i've been doing; keeping to myself, and trodging
along.

Not trying to be dramatic, just honest.

We pay for welfare and health care through taxes, so that nobody has to pay for treatment and nobody is left on the streets. Could be why Oprah calls it the happiest country in the world ;)

Plz dont let two dumb reply's discourage you from getting a DK1.. A shame nobody is looking at this subforum.
