Xbox One X and VR.. could it be possible with Rift?

I was one of the many that were disappointed to hear nothing about the future of VR or cross compatibility (as rumours suggested) with the upcoming Xbox One X. Sure, I have my Oculus Rift for VR and I love using it. I'm not looking to substitute my PC for my console or vice versa as I'll always have a need for both.

But my thoughts were that while Phil Spencer confirmed that the One X's hardware is fully compatible with VR he just didn't feel the interest was fully there yet. Now should they change their mind on this, do we think that they will need to offer their own hardware for this? Or do we think there would actually be a way to utilise existing Rifts and Vives?

I guess my thought process was IF we were able to piggy back existing VR hardware.. could it be implemented as simply as say using the Xbox streaming app for with Rift, and then from the console or game options toggle a "VR" setting to send two images to our headsets then just stream in VR? Maybe that logic is too easy and much would be involved. But I guess this is where I was hoping wiser minds could chime in on this idea.

  • You'd need a converter box like what Vive uses and PSVR to use the Rift. The 'X has 3 USB ports and one HDMI out. Just not practical. Probably a better chance of seeing the new Windows VR devices working on the 'X. Won't require additional USB and I would say there would be a better chance of seeing a converter box for those if it needs it for video.

Microsoft has decided after evaluating the current situation that their best approach to keep in step with Apple and Google is to focus their VR effort through their PC based Windows 10 structure - Windows VR supporting a number of HMD's (such as the new Acer unit).

Those that tried to allude to the possibility of a XBoneX link to CV1 (Rift) were talking out of their hats. The relationship between OVR and MS had suffered a number of setbacks, starting with the impact that MS had on the launch of the CV1, and a cooling of contact over VR initiatives following a clash with certain execs in both camps.

Fundamentally, the XBoneX would find it near impossible to accommodate the current three sensor set-up needed to optimally run CV1, and there would be an issue for MS to have to go away and create a new portal infrastructure to support Oculus Home on their new console content portal.

With the failed attempt to incorporate fully the promised "Streaming of XBone games on the CV1" - the writing was on the wall for the MS / OVR relationship - and I think both parties have burned all bridges towards possible partnerships / support in the future. To think otherwise is to show a level of wishful thinking that could prove dangerous.

Not sure what you mean there. You can stream XB games on the CV1.

"Fully" is the operative word. What was promised was a lot more than just viewing certain games with no tracking in the Rift. But I think that from both sides the bare minimum was delivered.
