Battery Life Meta Quest 3

The battery life sucks, just bought today & even fully charged was lucky to get 2 hours on this machine ggggrrrrrrrr

  • This is normal with the Quest 3.  It demands more power than the Quest 2.  If you want to extend your battery life you will have to purchase a headset battery strap.  Meta sells theirs for $130 but you can find third party battery straps like from Bobo or Kiwi.

Thanks for that information 👍 I was unaware of this & was slightly shocked it only lasted that long, how long does the head strap batteries give you?

I bought the Meta Elite strap with battery, and when playing Dungeons of Eternity the headset combined with the extra battery on the strap completely drain in just over two hours. I was expecting about double that amount with that combination.

  • That sounds about right.  Depending on what apps are running, screen brightness, etc, 2 to 2.5 hours is typical.  It's not too different on the Quest 2, but under the right conditions I was able to get the Quest 2 to almost 3 hours before it would shut itself off.

Some sort of extended battery is helpful and can extend run-time before needing a recharge.

Hello there Steeefi, we noticed that you are needing help with the Quest 3's battery life and charging when in PCVR. We understand having a longer battery life can allow you to play in VR longer, and we would love to look into this for you!

So from what we know, the Quest 3 does have on average 2.2 hours of battery life which can vary depending on how you are using the headset. You can actually read more about the specs Here.

As for the your headset not charging when in PCVR, can you let us know what cable are you using?

      • Note: Link cable is a data transfer cable and won't charge suffeciently as they are just meant to transfer data.

We hope to hear from you soon!

Meta itself notes the link cable is Full Speed Ahead intended for both data transfer and powering the headset. Provided the USB port it is plugged into can provide enough power. It's listed as Quest 3 compatible and the Quest 2 was indeed kept at a full charge with the link cable.

        Meta advertises data AND power.

Buy a $20 USBC splitter cable on Amazon they have 2 USB c ports 1 for fast charging up to 100watts  (the good ones anyway) the other is for the link cable seen slightly bigger ones that have 2 USB C's USB 2.0 and 3.1 plus a 3.5mm audio jack for around $20 this is what I got for storage expansion you can play games off a external hard drive. I have a tiny USB 3.1 to SD adapter and a USB c to SD adapter that plug right into the multi-port adapter.

Wow, you can play games off an SD card?  I can't quite visualize the setup.  Would luv to see this.  Can you create a diagram and post it on here?  I'm sure tons of folks would like to see this also.  I'm already close to my 512Gb limit.

I found a thread on Reddit this is sage advice. There are battery packs with USB C and regular USB that are rated at 30 Watts and have QC4 fast charge built in. There's one that's 40,000 milliamp hours (mah). Need to buy a compatible cable for high speed and there are some six footers with right angle and straight plugs that work perfectly with a quest 3. If everything is charged up when you start you have an amazing amount of play time. When the plated obviously the battery Bank can take a day to charge but if you only use it for a couple hours at a time this is the best solution yet.

Oh and the charger I found is 30 bucks can't go wrong. Good luck.

  • Yep.  That's true Jonny.  The best thing to do is buy a good power bank on Amazon or Ebay and plug it in with a long USB C cable.  That's the way I have mine setup and can play for hours.   I use a 50,000mah power bank.  It works really well.

  • After 1 year its down to 30 minutes, 30 mins more with the bobo strap battery, it declined a lot over time

After +1 year my preordered Q3 still gets 1.5 hours runtime until my battery is down to about 20% charge (I try to avoid dragging the headset battery below 20%).  Plus, I get an extra 1.5-2 hours with my Q3 Elite Battery Strap.

I think that the only reasons you may be getting those low runtimes is if you've either dragged your batteries down to 0% a number and/or overcharged them.  If you're still under warranty I suggest you contact meta support.

You also may want to try using an external battery pack.  I have a Romoss 10000mahr 30 watt pack I bought from Amazon and this gives me another 2.5-3 hours runtime.
