Bricked unit after update

Firmware 83 just broke my quest 2. Was working fine then after update screen just switches between pass through and a black screen. I can't do anything with it. I've exhausted all suggestions from tech support.

 

Factory Reset

Update via software center

Even using adb to revert to firmware 76

 

Meta said they won't help me because it is out of warranty.  Can someone explain how this is a warranty issue? They released an update that broke my perfectly working headset and now it's my problem? All i was offered was a discount on a refurbished headset. I didn't break it,  it didn't fail from age and use or abuse. YOU broke it and expect me to just buy a new one? 

I've reported this to BBB meta should be ashamed of their practices

    I got the v83 update on my Q3 yesterday. After rebooting and selecting my profile, the screen went black and I had to wait quite a long time, maybe 5 minutes or more, then it went into passthrough, then I had to wait a bit more, then I was able to switch to the virtual environment, and everything was good after that. Maybe you didn't wait long enough after updating?

    • Thanks but I did let it sit.  It just flashes between passthrough and either a black screen or the setup screen.  It's never on the setup screen long enough for me to click anything. Meta has lost a customer for good

  • I've had this happened to me once for my quest 2. I had to buy another one while arguing with them while fixing it. They did eventually honor the RMA request, but I had already bought another quest 2...

    Seems to be an issue with auto updates or something. Only thing I can suggest is try turning off auto updates IF it's possible, or making sure your headset is turned off FULLY before you are done using it.

    I know that doesn't help your issue RIGHT NOW, but for future references.

    Only thing I can say is, "Karen up" and make sure you get an RMA. It's not your fault their update broke your system, and I'm sure there are laws that protect you for that stuff happening, regardless if it's out of warranty or not.

      Thanks I've tossed it already. Purchased a used one for $25 off ebay. I'm going to use this while I wait for valves new VR to come out. Meta won't be getting any more of my business. 

  • Hi, after update v83, my quest 3 went into constent update, then tracking was automatically turning on and off, at the e same time tracking off, meta said out of warranty sorry, offered a refurbished for the same price as a refurbished €400, was out of Warranty 2 weeks, i was even using it went the update started, emailed four times, software update 12 nov, tracking broken, screen spinning around, no help

        Yes i did, did that about 10 times, said it was up to date, it strange that an update broke the tracking software , but no repair offered , i was just getting back into it, i will wait now until next year , and be warry now out of warranty, 1 year now only aswell, it was 2, i know big box small box, if that happened to ps5, annoyed aswell, i paid the original €700 as well, the next happy disappointed experience can wait, 

  • Yes, steam frame etc, the look on my face, how long have we been hoping for these things, about 5 years, the box thing aswell, amazed

      Oh very irritating, seems like the software update on mine , if your not covered by warrenty, meta didn't help me, i waited a week turning mine on and off, still gone, if your talking to meta customer care, i don't know if it's not a robot or automate assistant

    Im having the same issue with my quest 3 from the v83 update.  They keep giving me the run around on an email loop. Ive reported this already with the BBB. I believe we can also report to the FTC and the office of the attorney general which would help provide data for a class action lawsuit. It very unethical that META breaks a person's property with firmware updates, which they are supposed to provide, and then refuse to fix or replace what they broke. Interesting how this happened around the same time last year before a major holiday.

      I believe, its because its out of warranty, unfortunately, i know i think that too, just mine was very bad timing, i had used mine alot, i don't have the time to do any legal actions, mine was out of Warranty, im just going to buy a new one, and pay it off over several months, the software update didn't install properly on mind, but because no warranty, also no technical repair, because the units just get replaced, too fidley to fix, you should do that, i have worse problems unfortunately , they said four times so no other way

        This is not a warranty issue. They broke your headset with a bad firmware release. What you can do is to stop rewarding them by buying a new one. 

  • this happened to me too, i tried everything and i really dont want to replace my quest 2 or talk to meta support since i feel like they wont be much help based on the replies you got (also i dont have warranty anymore). i have hope mine works again after new quest update rolls out, any updates on the bricked headset tho?

      No i found a used quest 2 on ebay no controllers for $25. Using that one for now and will be switching to valves new headset next year....done with meta

  • I get you, your not wrong, im not rewarding them, i just want a new one, to play some games, its only starting to get better now after 2 years , and new home is much better also, if i don't just get a new one, then, i won't have one, i think they're not going to make another model until 2027, we will watch what happens with steam frame, there is no other vr heaset i want, i can use meta for pc vr too , im kinda playing along through the good and bad times, im always happy but a bit disappointed, could of been better but ok

      I have to see it like €500, is the price of a packet of crisps for a multi billionaire, of who ever meta is,
