- KentobiHeroic ExplorerOculus Quest requires a connection to the mobile app for initial setup, but that’s the only phone requirement. You don’t need a google account, but you do need a facebook account to enable social features. You do need access to Wifi in order to download apps to the headset, though some single player games do not need continuous WiFi.

The app is used to steal your personal data, nothing more, they could have done the setup without it,

Didn't know that. Thanks! - wuzpRising StarMost people don't realize the requirements are worded as an Android or iOS "device" with both WiFi and Bluetooth. I have the Android app loaded on a Chromebook and it works just fine.
- Generally after the initial setup that Kentobi mentioned, the only times you still need the phone are for changing your profile pic (can be done from the Rift software on a PC too) or turning developer mode on/off. You could always get a friend to install the app, set up the Quest, then delete the app. You can buy games from inside the Quest or the website and it will run on the internet itself (don't need the phone to install games or anything) after it's been set up.

When i bought the product no where they were saying all those requisites, neither was on the box.
On the Oculus Store page: "Setup requires an iPhone or Android mobile phone and the Oculus app (free download)."On the back of the box: "Requires an Oculus account, wireless internet access and an iPhone or Android smartphone to run the Oculus app (free download) for setup." - KuraokamiExplorerThis is nonsense. There is *zero* reason Oculus needs a link to your phone, aside from mercilessly invading one's privacy, that is.

Need a phone, "just for setup". Bull**bleep**.
i.e. We want to close the loop on you, your Facebook account, your phone, and your PC, maximum profit & invasiveness. Screw this. It's a damned VR headset. It shouldn't need a @@#$@#$ phone. Such absolute invasive bull**bleep**

This is exactly what they use the App for, I monitored the app on my mobile phone and it was sending data all the time, since I installed it i started getting spam and scam messages and calls, my e-mail stated getting tones of adds not only from Meta (e-mail was created only for the Meta account) and found my profile info on many scam websites. pointed by google security checks.

Yeah, this is annoying. I'm using this for work. I have a work computer. I do not have a work phone.

I bought 2 for my elderly dad and uncle who tried mine and loved the immersion videos. They are not mobile and do not mobile devices to download apps. They just want to enjoy the videos but sadly I have to return these. Totally unnecessary and not right to exclude people in that situation.

you could have done it for them

Might help, you need a PC/Laptop with WiFi and Bluetooth.
You can download the Oculus Developer Hub on your computer and pair the device using that.
Are you sure about that?
Oculus Developer Hub requires that the Quest is already set up and logged in to an account before it can connect (using wifi). I can't find any info about ODH having bluetooth or that it can do the initial mobile only setup step (which this thread is about).

Totally agree! You can't set up your device without a cell phone, AND you can't share games across multiple headsets in your house. Every time you turn off the headsets they lose all memory of shared games, and the only way to resynch previously shared games is with the cell phone of the sleeping brother??? WTLF Meta!?!? You can't manage two headsets with one mobile app either, but FAR WORSE is that if the person with the app is traveling or in school - NOBODY CAN PLAY? We've owned these for 1 day and I think they're being returned... Horrific product management guys, true to form.

This is so annoying that I actually returned mine,
The amount of data they take from mobile just doesn't make since, I bought a standalone device and I dont want to give meta my phone number and all of my mobile data, they will not let you use the device without taking all of your personal data from the mobile phone!!!
