Cannot set Oculus as the default OpenXR runtime

I get this pop up every time I open Oculus app. I can't seem to get it to go away even after trying to click it to set it as default but nothing happens. I cant't seem to launch apps from unknown sources like Roblox and it won't get recognized either in the library, perhaps cause of the OpenXR isssue. Re-installing doesn't seem to work either. Any ideas?

  • It's probably a permissions issue as the OpenXR runtime is set in the HLKM section of the registry. Try right-clicking the Oculus app shortcut (while it's closed) and choosing "Run as administrator". That should give the app enough permissions to change the OpenXR setting.

  • Hey there, Fluffzy. Thank you for reaching out about not being able to set the Oculus as a default. We know that having issues such as this can take you away from your VR time, and we would like to lend a hand to help out. So we can get a little clarity into your issue, can you answer the following?

Are you attempting to open the Meta Quest mobile app or the Meta Quest Desktop app?

Other than reinstalling the app, what troubleshooting have you done?

I'm using the desktop oculus app. I have done driver installs and updates to the oculus app to hopefully fix the issue but so far nothing has fixed it. During my troubleshooting I encountered another issue, whenever I try to run the app as adminstrator, it opens and goes through the app status window and then gives me the message "Can't reach Oculus service."

I then proceed to repair the app but I get an error during the repair installation process and prompts me to restart the computer, which I have done several times. I have repeated these steps around 4 times to try resolving the issue and as well trying to fix the OpenXR issue. I am completellt clueless as to what the reasons could be causing all these issues which has led me to the thought of just perhaps doing a fresh Windows install as a last resort. Thanks for your time and I would enjoy possible fixes and solutions!

Thanks for getting back to us, Fluffzy. Next we'd recommend a full clean reinstallation of the desktop app, this gets all the cached files as well. Follow the steps below and let us know how it turns out.

        • Disconnect the Rift/Link cable from the computer.
        • Disconnect your computer from the internet.
        • Backup any necessary content.
        • You can find steps on how to do so by clicking here.
        • Reboot into Safe Mode.
        • Uninstall Oculus PC app using the Control Panel.

        • Delete all Oculus folders from the following folder:
        • C:\Program Files

        • Remove any Oculus folders from the following locations:
        • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData
        • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Local
        • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\LocalLow
        • C:\Users\YourUserProfile\AppData\Roaming
        • C:\OculusSetup-DownloadCache

        • Restart your computer in normal mode.
        • Reconnect your computer to the internet.
        • Install Oculus PC app again using the setup tool from our website here.

I was able to fix this problem by using admin rights (I just gave myself permissions for admin and was able to press the button)

        Hey, ElderWolf25!

You'll just need to find the app on your PC (either in the Windows menu or a shortcut on your desktop), right-click it, and select Run as Administrator.

Let us know if that solves things for you!

  • Hi,

after trying everything for many hours I installed the Oculus OpenXR manually via the Registry:

    1. Search for the OpenXR json file, mine was here (for 64bit):
      C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\oculus_openxr_64.json
    2. Open the Registry Editor as Admin:
Type "regedit.msc" into the Windows Search Bar and choose "Run as administrator"
    3. Search for the keys in the screenshots and manually modify them, add the correct path to your OpenXR runtime
    4. Start Meta Quest Link client and check the OpenXR entry
    5. Test with some software, I was now able to check the OpenXR box in X-Plane 12

    Have fun!
    Best
    Andreas
