Charging cable bricked by update.

To meta

After v77, the iniu link charging cable as well as other third party cables have stopped working because of this software update and has yet to be fixed on v79. I would like to know if Meta plans on fixing this issue; If so when, as the headset is practically unusable now as its battery life is terrible. Telling people to use the stock charger is not a solution, it is not long enough for concurrent use and isn’t even possible to use while doing PC VR via a link cable. Since this update, I and others can’t even bother to use this device as the amount of time it’s got is not sufficient enough. Being forced to stop playing because of this problem is absolutely infuriating especially when playing online games with people or being in the middle of a segment without a save point in a game.

Thank you for your time

  • I have the same problem. charging with a cable directly into a power supply will charge, but i now have 3 "split" charge link cables that will not show up as charging on my goggles. very frustrating.

      Hi rholt51,

Thanks for posting into our forum. We see you're having some charging issues, and we'd like to look into this for you! As of 08/18, the mass charging issue should be resolved for users with the link cable and the cable included in the Meta Quest box so if you're still experiencing problems, please select our name to get to our profile page. Next, click "Send a Message" to privately message us! Please remember, you must be signed into the community first to send us a private message.

      Thanks!

        Hi meta

It would appear you have fixed the problem. Would have been nice if you also responded to my original post or my feedback report. I’d like to add I’ve been checking this every day for give or take a month, and it only started working again today being the 08/26 not the 08/18. I was keeping my headset updated to the latest version. At best this is another miscommunication at worst you’re just lying. I believe that you guys need to be more transparent. Can there please be acknowledgement and timelines of these major bugs when they happen. The fact of the matter is that most people decide whether to use something based on ease of use, but you guys seem to love making stuff difficult.

Anyway peace and love, Ninja pen05

p.s. give Zuck a kiss from me

  • A lot of people have been commenting / complaining about this matter, mainly in specific regard to the INIU cable.

    Here's some recent discussion:

v79 link cable not establishing a connection

Quest 3 suddenly making repeated connect noises wont recharge

... and it's also mentioned in the v79 PTC thread going back a couple of months...

    v79 ptc release thread

Further topics on the matter for reference:

    rapidly repeatedly connecting then disconnecting

new firmware broke 3rd party link cables

According to a supposed Meta Support message someone provided within the 2nd link, Meta are working on a fix, which supposedly will be with us "soon".

I read another response from Meta Support made today on another thread where they stated that 3rd party cables aren't officially supported, but there have been reports of this issue affecting the 1st party Meta cables too so a fix is still required.

There's a technique with the INIU cable to allow enabling Link while recharging (or at least preventing battery drain while in use) by simply disconnecting the USB-C power from the INIU power injector while the headset it turned on, then let it stop making the repeated connect/disconnect noises (takes a few seconds), then reconnect the USB-C power into the injector. That doesn't always work for everyone, and even if it does the recharging speed varies from person to person for some reason.

We otherwise wait - but yes it would only be of professional courtesy to inform the community of any progress in a resolution to such a widespread problem.

Hi LargeStyle2024 and thank you for your response, I’m going to try the technique you have suggested in your comment.

From this point forward I’m going to be talking about meta and this general situation as well as acknowledging some of the points in your comment.

I find it insane how there is little to no response from meta regarding this issue. For most big tech companies this would be a public relations nightmare; but I guess when your this in control of the market, like meta is right now, they can do whatever they want without any repercussions. They seem to have a complete disregard of the consumer.

Meta is a trillion dollar company, the fact our only course of action is to sit and wait is pathetic. We’ve had two version updates since this bug reared its ugly head, like what are they doing. They knew of these problems from the PTC. The whole point of the PTC is to stop situations like this. Also as you said in V79 they bricked their own link cable, the one that costs £89.99. That cable can’t even sustain charge of the headset during use. Them stating that “3rd party cables aren't officially supported” is also ridiculous because if a usb-c cable meets spec it should just work. They are artificially inhibiting the cables because they want to sell you an overpriced cable that can’t even do its job 100%.

I find it crazy I’ve seen no news articles about this. Imagine if any other company bricked a significant amount of third party cables, they’d have to hot-fix it in like 24 hours to avoid any brand damage, but many of us (including myself) have waited around for over a month checking forums and reddit just hoping meta will fix it already. Simply put them saying “soon” is not enough especially as people on the PTC told them about it before full release.

Anyway sorry for writing so much I just thought I’d write more about how I feel about the situation. hope your doing well, have a great day.

No worries mate, and I generally echo your sentiments.

Considering that the official link cable apparently can have the same issue as the 3rd party ones, logic would obviously then dictate that this problem is unintentional as currently no-one stands to gain. But who knows what's going on?!

Based on some very quick research, artificial inhibiting, or more specifically blocking a products operation, can be (shall we say) allowable, but only under very certain criteria, but does raise ethical questions regardless. It could be argued that a company has the right to only support 1st party accessories (especially if safety is in question) but there's a flip-side where that process could possibly be disallowed due to regional regulatory requirements upon market dominance & unfair restriction of competition.

Unless this type of matter has already been covered in some kind of black & white class action lawsuit, there's quite possibly / probably some grey to this matter. Yes we can clearly argue that we bought a product knowing that 3rd party accessories worked at the time of purchase, and in principle that's a tight argument, but unlike 1st party accessories which we can undoubtedly have a very significant amount of expectation of functionality, there's no guarantees placed on 3rd party accessories' functionality. That's also quite possibly why this matter hasn't been covered journalistically as it's a minefield of a story, and who wants to voluntarily jump into a minefield?

In this particular case, due to aforementioned potential ethical considerations, I would dare to presume that given the effective ultimatum, a sizeable percentage of Quest users would abandon Meta compared to ponying up for an unjustifiably expensive link cable, should that scenario (hypothetically or otherwise) happen. That's why I'm personally extending a very generous benefit of doubt in Meta's innocence because anything else could (and likely would) be very destructive for all parties.

That all said, yeah, I'm just as frustrated as you and many others here are, to the extent when I now look upon my Quest 3 with newfound negative association, which also plants the seed of uncertainty in my faith toward the products ongoing functionality and Meta as a whole for the foreseeable future.

For all our sakes, let's just hope they turn this around before any longer.

  • I don't know if you're referring to Meta's customers or their employees, but if the latter then I don't doubt that - we now just need good results from them.
