Forum Discussion
Hi LargeStyle2024 and thank you for your response, I’m going to try the technique you have suggested in your comment.
From this point forward I’m going to be talking about meta and this general situation as well as acknowledging some of the points in your comment.
I find it insane how there is little to no response from meta regarding this issue. For most big tech companies this would be a public relations nightmare; but I guess when your this in control of the market, like meta is right now, they can do whatever they want without any repercussions. They seem to have a complete disregard of the consumer.
Meta is a trillion dollar company, the fact our only course of action is to sit and wait is pathetic. We’ve had two version updates since this bug reared its ugly head, like what are they doing. They knew of these problems from the PTC. The whole point of the PTC is to stop situations like this. Also as you said in V79 they bricked their own link cable, the one that costs £89.99. That cable can’t even sustain charge of the headset during use. Them stating that “3rd party cables aren't officially supported” is also ridiculous because if a usb-c cable meets spec it should just work. They are artificially inhibiting the cables because they want to sell you an overpriced cable that can’t even do its job 100%.
I find it crazy I’ve seen no news articles about this. Imagine if any other company bricked a significant amount of third party cables, they’d have to hot-fix it in like 24 hours to avoid any brand damage, but many of us (including myself) have waited around for over a month checking forums and reddit just hoping meta will fix it already. Simply put them saying “soon” is not enough especially as people on the PTC told them about it before full release.
Anyway sorry for writing so much I just thought I’d write more about how I feel about the situation. hope your doing well, have a great day.
No worries mate, and I generally echo your sentiments.
Considering that the official link cable apparently can have the same issue as the 3rd party ones, logic would obviously then dictate that this problem is unintentional as currently no-one stands to gain. But who knows what's going on?!
Based on some very quick research, artificial inhibiting, or more specifically blocking a products operation, can be (shall we say) allowable, but only under very certain criteria, but does raise ethical questions regardless. It could be argued that a company has the right to only support 1st party accessories (especially if safety is in question) but there's a flip-side where that process could possibly be disallowed due to regional regulatory requirements upon market dominance & unfair restriction of competition.
Unless this type of matter has already been covered in some kind of black & white class action lawsuit, there's quite possibly / probably some grey to this matter. Yes we can clearly argue that we bought a product knowing that 3rd party accessories worked at the time of purchase, and in principle that's a tight argument, but unlike 1st party accessories which we can undoubtedly have a very significant amount of expectation of functionality, there's no guarantees placed on 3rd party accessories' functionality. That's also quite possibly why this matter hasn't been covered journalistically as it's a minefield of a story, and who wants to voluntarily jump into a minefield?
In this particular case, due to aforementioned potential ethical considerations, I would dare to presume that given the effective ultimatum, a sizeable percentage of Quest users would abandon Meta compared to ponying up for an unjustifiably expensive link cable, should that scenario (hypothetically or otherwise) happen. That's why I'm personally extending a very generous benefit of doubt in Meta's innocence because anything else could (and likely would) be very destructive for all parties.
That all said, yeah, I'm just as frustrated as you and many others here are, to the extent when I now look upon my Quest 3 with newfound negative association, which also plants the seed of uncertainty in my faith toward the products ongoing functionality and Meta as a whole for the foreseeable future.
For all our sakes, let's just hope they turn this around before any longer.

Yeah my opinion of meta hasn’t been great for a long time. It’s just insane how incredibly incompetent the higher ups calling the shots are. Like they brick the touch pro controllers every other update. They release updates from the PTC that no-one likes, are unfinished or straight up brakes features and sometimes all of the above. I just wish they gave the staff the time to refine everything instead of releasing updates that literally make me put my headset down and not touch it for like six months.
When I upgraded to the quest 3 I knew there was gonna be problems but this has been stupidest thing I’ve experienced with a tech device in quite a while. It’s sad this is VR now. Being at the mercy of the next mandatory auto update.
They can’t even say they didn’t do this on purpose. I just can’t get my head around why they would push these updates knowing these problems existed. It’s just confusing.
I hope they do better.
