Charging keeps getting interrupted.

Hi

I have a problem with my Quest 3. I only use it for media consumption. I always keep it connected to a USB cable for charging, so it’s supposed to stay charged all the time. Unfortunately, the Quest keeps interrupting the charging while I’m watching movies. If I don’t notice it, the battery drains completely within about 90 minutes. I recently got a BoboVR S3, but the same thing happens with it too.

I have to keep unplugging and replugging the cable. It's a replacement device from Meta.

  • Try taking off the Bobo and charge it again. I'm not saying it's the problem in your case but I have seen some similar problems here with battery headsets. Give it a try, you never know! Good luck! 🤞

I’ve been doing that for several months now. I always charge the Quest 3 externally to 100% first. Only then do I plug in the charging cable. It doesn’t matter whether it’s the BoboVR or a regular power adapter — at some point, the Quest just stops charging through the connector.

I’ve gotten into the habit of unplugging and plugging the cable back in every 30 minutes when I remember to.

OK, that really sounds like a software bug that's causing this. Maybe a false overheating signal is cutting off the charging. Definitely contact support.

  • I can't speak for the Bobo, I have an Elite strap with battery, but I find it is not a good idea to hot-plug in the charging cable to the external battery while using the headset. I always fully power off the Quest 3 before plugging in the cable, then I press and hold the reset button on the external battery until its LED turns green, then immediately after the green light goes out, I release the button (before it starts rapidly flashing amber). If I don't do that, the battery indicator in the Quest's lenses will only show one battery instead of two. Once I'm certain that both batteries are displayed, I can power up the headset and the batteries will charge perfectly. If I hot-plug the charge cable while using the headset, the batteries may not charge as expected, even if the battery indicator in the UI is showing both batteries present.

steve_40  the Bobo has a hot-swappable batteiy.....I have two batteries and can change them while i'm in vr. Is unplugging the cable not pretty much the same as swapping the battery?🤔

Also, the Bobo doesn't show you two batteries - at least mine does not, I have the first version, which came out shortly after Q3 release.

It just shows you the Quest battery with the charging arrow..... when the external battery is empty the charging arrow will disappear and the Quest battery starts running down.

Probably not, as the USB port has more than just the +/- contacts, there's also the data channels 🤔.

Maybe that's part of the issue that a lot of Bobo users seem to be having? 🤔 But I'm referring to using a headset with an external battery while it is simultaneously plugged in to the wall charger. If I disconnect the USB cable that is charging the Elite battery while using the headset, and plug it back in, the Elite battery will stop charging itself (but it will continue to charge the internal Quest battery until it depletes itself). I have to power off the headset and hold the reset button on the Elite battery to get it to start charging itself again.

I have had this happen as well. My solution to this is to allow the headset battery to deplete to 80-85% or so and then plug it in. That keeps the juice flowing to the headset while playing/watching and you don't have to worry about the battery reaching 100% and stop accepting juice from the charger.  The cable should keep the battery charged in place or it may trickle up some, but likely won't get to 100% where you'll run into that issue.

Unfortunately, that doesn't work for me. Currently, I always charge it to full, but before, I was just using the headset while charging. It simply stopped charging. It didn't matter what percentage of battery it had. Sometimes it happens multiple times. The most logical thing is the temperature. Unfortunately, I don't know what to do about it. I didn't have such problems with the Quest 2.
