Take it from a process control systems design engineer, even a spot of rust inside an electronic device means it has been exposed to moisture and could well be part of the problem. Moisture can evaporate and leave no, or very little evidence of the damage it has done to the sensors or other components while it was there. There should be zero rust. It is fairly likely to be at least part of the problem.
