Error adding a 10 year-old child to device

My 10 year-old son mowed lawns all summer to save up a MetaQuest 3S and we are having a hard time setting up the device for him. I created an account for him by folowing all the instructions. When following the prompts to add a device in the Meta Horizon App, I see a check box to add my child to the device. But nothing happens. I try to add the child by selecting Manage Profiles in the device settings and get an error "Failed to add profile to the headset. Try again later." I can't add him in the "+add a profile" in the device also. he doesn't have an email address associated with the account and was never asked to provide one since he is 10. What is the solution here? He is very upset that all the money he saved is wasted on a terrible experience.

  • An adult needs to be the primary account owner on the headset. Set up your son's account using the Family Centre setting in the mobile Meta Horizon app (from the home screen, click the "3 horizontal bars" icon and it should be the second option shown). It will require a credit card for identity verification. You then have to wait about 3 days for the credit card to be verified (you get charged $0.99 on the card, but it gets refunded to you). Note that if you try to add the child's profile to the headset before the credit card verification has completed, it will give you a vague error that "something has gone wrong try again later", so just wait 2-3 days or so and try again.

I went through this process to create his account. It didn't mention anything about waiting 2-3 days for activation, if just stated that it could take a while to get refunded. If it was the case that an adult has to be the primary account holder, then why can I set up the device as his and then add me, the adult? I would like it to be the other way around and have me as the owner so I can adjust settings and whatnot from the app. He doesn't have the app or a phone to put it on, so we can't manage the device using it. Not ideal. I can try again in a couple days, but the materials available don't give me hope that it will work.

Same happened for me. It's why so many people get stuck/confused when they start getting errors.

On the Quest, the primary account holder is the legal headset owner. So, if you want to have control of the settings from the app, your account must be the first one to be set up on the Quest headset. If you added your son first, you would need to do a factory reset and start again, adding yourself first. Then use the Family Centre in the app to add your son. That's probably why you are getting stuck, now that I think of it, you did it in the wrong order.
