Features broken in v85.0

Hi all. I am new to VR, and to the Quest etc. I am surprised it has taken me this long to start exploring VR as I have been a pc gamer for many years.

I got my first VR headset last week (Quest 3) and I absolutely love it. I have been getting to grips with where everything is, how to use Horizon OS etc.

I came home from work yesterday, called a friend of mine, and noticed that something had changed. It appears that automatic updates are turned on, and my headset updated to software version 85.0.

Since this unexpected update, I have noticed 2 problems. Suddenly I can’t play Population One. The game is now stuck on the initial ‘Logging In - Please Wait’ screen. I have done everything you can think of. Restarted my WiFi network, restarted the headset, removed the WiFi network and added it again, uninstalled the game etc etc. It makes no sense…it just suddenly doesn’t work.

I have also noticed that during a call with a friend (any friend) I can longer see the call preview window. It’s as if it is trying to connect and it can’t. The audio of the call works…but normally I can share my screen, or see their screen share etc, their name is displayed at the top of this window too. But this is definitely broken. It shows an animation where it is trying to load the information about the call…but it never does

So I guess my question is, do things like this break all the time after software updates? It seems from what I have been reading the Horizon OS is perhaps not as robust as I would have hoped, and that with each software update…something new breaks.

I really hope that isn’t the case, but personally I’m not off to a good start. I found a game I really like, and a call feature that I like using and after a few days of use, suddenly I can’t play the game anymore, and the call feature/window is broken because a software update broke it.

Is there something I could have possibly missed? I am wondering if there is a way to revert to whatever software version I had before this? I am guessing probably v84.0 but I hadn’t checked this. All I know is v85.0 was installed and that is when these things stopped working

Thanks all - have a good day!

Thank you very much indeed!! I decided to connect it to the pc and use the update tool, but the headset kept getting stuck. Just a black screen. So I decided to just factory reset and see what happens...it's fixed!! Woohoo!

Something definitely wasn't right, but whatever the issue was, it's fixed now. Population One is working nicely, and the issue I had with the calling app is fixed too. Thanks very much for the software update tool suggestion :D

It was v83.... v84 was skipped. Unfortunately, you can't roll back to an earlier version.🙁

You should send a bug report about the broken call feature and hopefully it will be fixed in a future update.

Report a bug on Meta Quest

For Population One.... have you tried, if loading an earlier savegame works?

In your cloud back up there is a little arrow left from the game name, tap on it to expand, select an earlier save game and click "restore".

    https://secure.oculus.com/my/cloud-backup/

If this also doesn't work you might delete your app data in the headset.

settings - storage - select the game - delete data

    Good luck 🤞

Hi, thank you for the reply. I didn’t know about the cloud backup, that could definitely be worth a try.

I did delete the game data last night, but I’ll try restoring a backup. I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks again 🙂

  • Just an fyi meta is good but their os is really buggy. Best you can do is report the bug and hope it gets fixed. You can report it on the vr by clicked the meta or oculus button 5 times rapidly.

Hi, thank you for that. I did actually report it last night, so hopefully they’ll be able to fix it for a future release.

Didn’t know about clicking the meta button 5 times though. That’s pretty cool - thank you! 🙂

@ROG3BOT There is one more thing you might try. I have v85 and it's working OK.. It is possible that the update you got was faulty. It can happen with a small interruption in the download which can cause an error. You can try connecting the headset to your computer and using the Meta Software update tool which can repair a software update. I had to it myself on v79 and it fixed it. Here is the link! Worth a try. 😊

Yep. Welcome to Meta. You'll get used to it.

I am wondering if there is a way to revert to whatever software version I had before this?

Nope. But what you can do is disable the following settings:

    General>Software update>Automatic updates>Software updates (toggle to off)

General>Software update>Automatic updates>Security and critical updates (toggle to off)

General>Software update>Automatic updates>Automatically power headset to update (toggle to off)

Then, in future, just check manually to see if a software update is pending, then lurk in these forums to see what weird and wonderful new bugs users report. Then you can decide whether to install the update or not. That said, Meta will force-update your headset at a future date regardless of the above settings. The pending update notification will tell you the date that the headset will update itself.

There are two other good reasons for disabling auto-updates:

    1. there was an issue 7 months ago where the headset would update itself but think that it was still out of date, so it got stuck in a never-ending update loop.
    2. if something should go wrong causing the headset to crash to the Recovery screen while the headset is unattended, that screen can cause burn-in if left for prolonged periods.

    I am guessing probably v84.0

v84 doesn't exist. For some weird reason, Meta started skipping even numbers. The next version will be 2.1, go figure.

Regarding Population One, try the following:

    • Under General>Storage, find the game and click the "clear app data" icon
    • See if there is a cloud backup of your savegame data, and try restoring an earlier save to your headset.
    • If that doesn't help, maybe the server is down, or the developer needs to provide an update.

  • Yep. Welcome to Meta. You'll get used to it.

Haha, thank you. I'm pleased that I am finally stepping into the world of VR, and to be honest I should have known better. Software issues such as the ones I have encountered so far are to be expected I suppose.

Nope. But what you can do is disable the following settings:

    General>Software update>Automatic updates>Software updates (toggle to off)

General>Software update>Automatic updates>Security and critical updates (toggle to off)

General>Software update>Automatic updates>Automatically power headset to update (toggle to off)

I have a feeling the suggestion of turning these off will save me a ton of issues in the future. So thanks very much. I have turned all of them off. Phew!

Thanks for the suggestions & advice. Much appreciated :)
