First Time Quest 3 start (Dark Grey Screen)

i unboxed the quest and downloaded the meta app on my pc and connected the quest 3 via cable link to the pc.
after the instructions from the meta software I successfully connected to the pc and there is a active sign on the devices page of the software.

But whenever I turn on the quest 3 by taping the power button on the side of the device, it shows 4 horizonzmtally located Dots that disappear in a split second, then follow the dark grey screen and after a couple of seconds the device shut off. When I hit the meta button of my right controller, I can see the meta logo with a circle that I guess indicate loading. But after 1 cycle it disappeares too.

im not sure if my quest 3 is not damaged at this point.

  • If you are just tapping the button, and you will only get 3 lines, that might just be bringing you to the battery power message. If there is no % number over the 3 lines maybe you need to charge the headset. However if you want to start up your headset you need to hold the power button in for a few seconds to start it up. Just tapping won't start it.

Thank you for your quick help. I tried to tap, hold it for about 10 to 30 seconds, when I hold the power button on the side, I can see a blue quest symbol but then, it just show me the same darker grey image without anything else to see. I tried also to do a reset by holding the volume down and power button but that did not help aswell after choosing the reboot option.

        Hey there Huhha,

We've just come across your post regarding the boot issue you are having with your Meta Quest 3 headset. We want you to have the best possible time in VR, so we thought we'd lend a hand.

Please ensure that you have completed the setup process for your Meta Quest 3 headset prior to establishing a wired connection to your PC to dive into the world of PCVR.

After you have completed the setup process and the boot issue should persist, then, please attempt the following steps:

        1. Try removing any unsupported third-party accessories that may affect boot (such as external battery packs, accessories that plug into the USB-C port, etc.)
        2. Check for sufficient battery charge
        3. A headset with a very low battery charge will power itself off. This may be mistaken for a boot issue if the headset is shutting down on startup due to insufficient battery charge.
        • Ensure the headset is charged by allowing it to charge for at least 2 hours.
        • Note the color of the LED on the side of the headset. If after charging for 2 hours, you still see a red LED, this could be a sign of a battery or charging issue.

Let us know if this has resolved your issue, as we want to get you to experience the Metaverse as soon as possible!

  • Hi Huhha 🙂

    stupid question, but......

Did you connect the Quest right out of the box with your pc....... without pairing it with the mobile app first?

  • It sounds like the headset isn’t actually finishing its boot cycle, which usually means the Quest 3 either isn’t charged enough or the software setup didn’t complete properly. I’d start by unplugging it from the PC, holding the power button for about 15–20 seconds to force a full shutdown, then charge it with the official charger for at least 30 minutes before trying again. When you turn it on, don’t press any controller buttons—just let it boot. If it still goes from the four dots to a dark grey screen and shuts off, try booting into the recovery menu by holding power + volume down and selecting Restart. If the headset can’t stay on even after that, it’s likely a firmware issue from the factory and you may need to contact Meta Support for a replacement, because that behavior isn’t normal for a new device.
